DESIGN NAME: Aluminum Heatsink Laptop Stand
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Laptop Stand
INSPIRATION: We spend long hours at our desks, sitting in front of our computer. Depending on work environment, you may be using a desktop or laptop. While laptop has the freedom of portability, it doesn't support healthy ergonomics for the user, not to mention the long working hours. This common problem is easily relatable to everyone. Just by angling your laptop slightly
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The AHLS is a laptop stand that can reduce your laptop's heat while improving ergonomics silently. By utilizing aluminum's amazing material attributes, the laptop stand acts as a passive heatsink and dissipates heat into the air without the use of fans or power. I think there's a certain beauty within analog designed object that can't be replaced by software, lines of codes. The beauty is simply place your laptop on the laptop stand and it'll do the rest for you, automatically and instantly.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The Aluminum Heatsink Laptop Stand is a laptop stand that can reduce your laptop's heat while improving ergonomics silently. By utilizing aluminum's amazing material attributes, the laptop stand acts as a passive heatsink and dissipates heat into the air without the use of fans or power.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: This project started in May 2016 and finished in July 2016. The entire duration of the project took place in Brooklyn, NY.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: By utilizing the amazing material attributes, the laptop stand acts as a passive heatsink and dissipates heat into the air. It is CNC milled out of a single block of aluminum 6063, sandblasted with an anodized finish. Without the use of fans, the design doesn’t require power and remains quiet.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Practical research, Identify problems, generate insights and design solutions, Qualitative and Pragmatic research methodology, Conducted interviews, researched thermal conductivity of different materials, researched optimal manufacturing method, Conducted experiments of cooling effects with heatsinks bought online, built foam core prototypes to test angle of laptop stand and ergonomics.
CHALLENGE: The biggest challenge was to validate my hypotheses, investigate variables and collect data. I've also set myself some project restrictions, such as; product will only be used with MacBook Pro, not allowed to modify any internal components of the laptop, the prototype must be made with proposed material. Another challenge I've faced was to put faith in my educated guess — a combination of design skills, education, research and academic studies. The result works flawlessly as I've predicted.
