Interview with Larisa Zolotova at Monday 19th of March 2018

FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
LZ: The designer's love for classical music and Russian ballet inspired me to create this ring. In addition, this ring gives me the opportunity to show one of my strengths, when working on organic shapes.

FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
LZ: I was focusing on originality of the ring and ease of production.

FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
LZ: I am exhibiting and selling this design.

FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
LZ: This project was originally designed in July 2016 and it took 3 weeks to complete.

FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
LZ: This project was not commissioned. It was pure inspiration.

FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
LZ: It is discussable to sell or lease the production rights for this design.

FS: What made you design this particular type of work?
LZ: I wanted to implement my inspiration of ballet into a jewelry and use a big size of center gemstone.

FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
LZ: I avoid seeing other jewelry designs before I began the project and during the realization. It helps not to get stuck on one idea. In order to develop inspiration, I used only photos of Russian ballet and nature.

FS: Who is the target customer for his design?
LZ: This dynamic, intriguing, complex and unique jewelry design might appeal to extraordinary women: independent spirits forging their own path and inspiring others to do the same.

FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
LZ: This Ballerina’s sculpture unique bezel design sets this design apart from other fine jewelry.

FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
LZ: Ballerina Ring is what it is. There is no any hidden meaning.

FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
LZ: This ring is created as a 3D CAD design. The shape of the ballerina is produced using T-Splines technology within Matrix, as well as the use of lost-wax casting process.

FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
LZ: The position of Ballerina figure is unique. It is located under the gemstone and incorporated into a bezel. Usually, elements of sculpture arrange on the side of the gemstone or a shank.

FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
LZ: I created this ring from the stage of designing, till the stage of buffing. I outsourced only stages of printing 3D wax model and casing.

FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
LZ: The role of technology is huge in this design. CAD Modeling, printing wax are the main parts of the completing the design

FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
LZ: The only one research was done during making the Ballerina ring is creating a wax model and bronze prototype, in order to identify any structural defects and weak points for production purposes.

FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
LZ: Polishing and setting fish-tail setting stages, after CAD Modeling, were the most challenging for this project.

FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
LZ: I always wanted to participate in A'Design Competition because it well-known and the most respectful design contest in the world. That is why I choose and submitted the best of my designs.

FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
LZ: I learned some important principles of creating designs for production purposes, one of them is dividing the piece into some separate elements.

FS: Thank you for providing us with this opportunity to interview you.
