DESIGN NAME: Ballerina
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Ring
INSPIRATION: My love for classical music and Russian ballet inspired me to create this ring, which offers the opportunity to showcase one of my strengths: designing with organic shapes.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: As seen in the pictures, this elegant rose gold ring and its morganite center stone surrounded by beautiful pink sapphires is one to behold. The unique bezel design allows the sparkle of the gemstones to shine through and show their beautiful colors while the ballerina figure and wavy stone arrangement make up a dynamic shape of the ring, giving the impression that the ballerina is floating along your hand. The morganite provides delicate color and as it elevates the status of the ring.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Solid piece without movement.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: This project was originally designed in July 2016 and took three weeks to complete. It was exhibited on August 5, 2016 at the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) in Carlsbad, CA.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: This ring was created as a 3D CAD design using Matrix 8.0 while the sculpted ballerina was produced using T-Splines. Lost-wax casting was used to create two separate cast pieces in rose gold: the bezel and the shank which were subsequently soldered together. The smooth edges make the ring comfortable to wear, and because of its streamlined design, is light and doesn't look bulky.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Ring Size 7, could vary. Dimensions: 24x28x35mm.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: I originally created two wax models to make a bronze prototype in order to identify any structural defects and weak points.
CHALLENGE: The main challenge was to make the ring with the right size bezel to properly secure the big stone without causing any chipping or breaking.
The additional challenge was to incorporate the ballerina into the design, while making it comfortable, safe to wear and easy for production.
