Editor Frank Scott (FS) from DesignPRWire has interviewed designer Nu Infinity (NF) for A' Design Awards and Competition. You can access the full profile of Nu Infinity by clicking here. Access more information about the award winning design The Naturalist here.

Interview with Nu Infinity at Thursday 27th of April 2017

FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
NF: An avid traveller - photographer. The Family Living has been turned into memorabilia cum best-work display space. The owner frequently travels the world, part leisure and part work. His street and urban photography is appreciated by local and oversea travel magazines. When there are guests, the dining table is enough to cater many, followed by sharing his travels and works in the Family Living. Times where he needs to tuck away for inspirations, it would be the platform in the Master Bedroom.

FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
NF: The brief requires us to achieve absolute luxe for the end product whilst filling client's requirement for a living space fitted for a travelling photographer with his family. Instantly, we wanted to go with natural materials, with the floor being marble, walls being marble, granite and solid wood, dining table custom-made with solid wood and etc. to achieve luxury with depth. Careful use of different colour mirrors throughout the unit helps either elongating the space, widening the view and creating posh ambiences. Naturally dead spaces are given new meaning such as the platform for reading and thinking at one end of the Master Bedroom. Naturally for us, the first thing was to solve issues with effective space planning.

FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
NF: We would want to push and challenge the level of interior design in Malaysia by utilizing this project and award to showcase our ideas and skills to tackle regional and international projects.

FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
NF: We spent a fortnight on coming up with the preliminary ideas and sketches. Then further develop them in another two months with further refinement to come up with the final design to suit the client's budget.

FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
NF: This design was established based on the client's brief to produce a product that is internationally accepted due to the different buyers from other countries but with a pinch of Malaysian taste - through the use of local material such as Meranti wood, Nyatoh wood and Semangkuk wood.

FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
NF: We have always insisted to do both design and build to safeguard the integrity of the design. The end product should be conveyed exactly how it is intended - through proper detailing and exact material selections.

FS: What made you design this particular type of work?
NF: We have always pushed ourselves to produce better and more meaningful designs. As we slowly master one style or idea, we move on to challenge the next. For this, we hope to continue to perfect our design flair and detailing for up class residential properties for private clients and property developers.

FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
NF: Our works are very much influenced by Japanese and Taiwanese works as their ideas are matured and very befitting home owners or residential projects. However, sub-consciously, our end products no doubt still lean towards being modern and fresh to cater to today's demanding lifestyles.

FS: Who is the target customer for his design?
NF: The Property Developer asked for a design that would impress and bewilder their international clientele. However, to better strengthen the brief, we created a scenario whereby a international renown photographer moved to Kuala Lumpur to reside at this property whilst displaying his winning award works from around the world.

FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
NF: No

FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
NF: As the name suggests, we proposed and used natural material to exude the posh and refined feeling and ambience - wood slabs, vertical wall plants, marble and granite.

FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
NF: AUTOCAD, Photoshop, 3D Studio Max & Vray

FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
NF: The many different material posed a challenge as the joints and connections require particular attention.

FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
NF: Our builders were given tests when it comes to applying the many different material and detailing requirements.

FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
NF: Accuracy in relation to site measurements and assistance in depicting the ambience and feel of the spaces through 3D visualization to our client

FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
NF: No

FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
NF: The design and allocation of costs as to tally with the project budget given by the client. We had to go back and forth a number of times to make everything work - both aesthetics of the end product and the budget.

FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
NF: We are extremely proud and happy with the end product. We have won several awards locally and thought it would be best to share what Malaysian designers are capable of by entering into international design competitions.

FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
NF: We are more conscious about what are required to be among the top and how we can learn about enhancing our works in terms of design, detailing and avant garde ideas.

FS: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions?
NF: We hope to produce multiple award-winning worthy projects and submit to international competitions on a regular basis every year.

FS: Thank you for providing us with this opportunity to interview you.
