Interview with T Baldacci, P Festa, A Magri, V Vergari at Thursday 21st of April 2016 FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design? TB: The idea was born by drawing a line on the horizon of the sea, this differentiating what is above the surface, air and what is below, the water. It’s the division between a world explored, represented by the owner’s passions for wine, food and his beloved Tuscany; and a world to explore, his dream, the world underwater. From the desire to combine ideally these two worlds, explored and to explore, which are symbolized by two elements: air and water, we used a chemical composition through which when water and air come in contact, they create a bubble. FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve? TB: The focus of our project is the creation of a yacht that can be unique, recognizable and perfect to the owner's personality. Our work is knowing how to interpret the customer personality and to pursue projects that are as a custom dress made. FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design? TB: Winning the A’ Design Award is a great satisfaction, but above all it is a push and a motivation to always give the best of our ability, to push beyond the boundaries and to try to go further. FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept? TB: This project is our thesis project done during our last year of university FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration? TB: We chose, for our thesis, a yacht design project. After defining the owner's characteristics we had the inspiration and the concept: by drawing a line on the horizon of the sea, this differentiating what is above the surface, air and what is below, the water. From the desire to combine ideally these two worlds, explored and to explore, which are symbolized by two elements: air and water, we used a chemical composition through which when water and air come in contact, they create a bubble. FS: Who is the target customer for his design? TB: The owner’s life has been characterised by good fortune. He was born in Tuscany into a family that possessed land and cultivated wine. As a child he loved to go snorkeling along the wonders of the Tyrrhenian coast which is characterised by a rocky seabed and clear blue sea. Then with his family open a italian restaurants that immediately had of success, a great fortune but left him no time to pursue his passions. Today’s dream: Devote himself to diving and to sea thanks to this yacht. FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean? TB: Bolla means bubble in Italian and is the expression of the yacht concept. Bubble is the symbol of the union between air and water, which is the idea behind the project. FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project? TB: For the first part of research and ideas, we use simply pen and pencil to sketch. For the part of design the tools we use are: AutoCAD, Rhino, 3DS Max, Cinema 4D, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Indesign, Adobe Premiere FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design? TB: The inspiration. To see the reality and the nature from different perspectives. To use simple elements such as air and water to create the concept of the yacht. FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills? TB: We are Timothy, Paolo, Andrea and Veronica and we are a team of four young designers who met at university. We share the passion for design, for yachts, art and beauty. We love to combine our ideas, our creativity to create projects. Our mission is to unite our different experiences, to find ideas, to collaborate and to use our creativity to come up with solutions. What does to design mean? Design is everything, it is a way of thinking and seeing things from different perspectives and different points of view. FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design? TB: The research is very important for a designer, it is fundamental. The research is a way of inspiration and ideas. If we are curious, we can see the world around us with different eyes. For us, the search phase is the first fundamental part of any project ideation. FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition? TB: For a team of young designers, competitions are an excellent opportunity to visibility and to publicize their work. We decided to submit A 'Design Award because it is one of the largest yacht international competitions. FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work? TB: Each project makes us grow and every project we learn something new. Designing is the head that thinks and imagines, it is to unite ideas and different points of view of each of us to create something. Design in team is not only to develop a project, but is an exchange between us, an exchange of ideas, thoughts and emotions that develop your personality.
