Interview with Kim at Thursday 14th of April 2016 FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design? BK: The Lighting Cup is designed for multifunctional use. It is useable as a teacup and as a delicate lighting cover for the provided LED saucer. When illuminated, moonlit landscape is illustrated gently on the cup. The landscape illustration of the Lighting Cup revisits the traditional Korean landscape painting (Soomook-sansuwha) in three-dimension which elegantly reflects meditative Asian sentiment with our ‘Affective Artwork’. FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve? BK: Potable as a lighting, brightness can be expressed in pottery, Easy Operation FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design? BK: Promote sustainable and steady development of new products FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept? BK: It took five months FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration? BK: Originally, I wanted to give ordinary housewares extraordinary function and got the idea on Light Cup through an upset cup. FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself? BK: It will be produced and sold directly FS: Who is the target customer for his design? BK: Economic power women FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts? BK: I think this design is unique work FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean? BK: The landscape illustration of the Lighting Cup revisits the traditional Korean landscape painting (Soomook-sansuwha) in three-dimension which elegantly reflects meditative Asian sentiment with our ‘Affective Artwork’. FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project? BK: cnc FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design? BK: The lighting ceramic cup is usable as a teacup and as a delicate lighting cover for the provided LED saucer. Therefore, it should have thinner walls (2~3mm) than normal ceramic cups for better light transmittance. There was a difficulty in making a ceramic cup with thin walls because the cup shape was distorted during the manufacturing process FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills? BK: no FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design? BK: The light is turned on and off with a touch sensor and is powered by a rechargeable battery that supports a Micro-USB connection. FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept? BK: The lighting ceramic cup is usable as a teacup and as a delicate lighting cover for the provided LED saucer. Therefore, it should have thinner walls (2~3mm) than normal ceramic cups for better light transmittance. There was a difficulty in making a ceramic cup with thin walls because the cup shape was distorted during the manufacturing process. The problem was overcome through lots of trial and error, which led many know-hows on the process. FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition? BK: Through Moco Loko motiv site FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work? BK: I improved myrself FS: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions? BK: no
