Interview with Davide Chiesa at Friday 22nd of April 2016

FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
DC: The idea that new structures built in the city in the last five years and the existing famous, historical monuments could live together side by side, not only in the physical world but also in a miniature world has been immediately fascinating to me

FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
DC: My main challenge was to celebrate the big cultural change in the Milan skyline of the last five years.

FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
DC: this is the first product of a family of three different projects, designed over the idea that modern architecture could come in our everydaylife life

FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
DC: The project started in Milan in January 2015 with the first sketches and has been showed for the first time at Salone del Mobile in April 2015.

FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
DC: The idea for this project came out from my personal experience as a designer and my childhood history. The skyline of Milan is really changed in the last ten years and a skyscrapers silhouette appeared in the central part of the city. Where once my father brought me to the Luna Park, today we have a new area full of new buildings.

FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
DC: The product is produced by Ideafactory store in Milan and sold on internet by the same company. We look forward for new commercial opportunities and partnerships.

FS: What made you design this particular type of work?
DC: You have to know that the skyline of this city has dramatically change in the last five years and finally a skyscraper’s silhouette appeared in the central part of the city. Where once my father brought me when I was a child to the old Luna Park, today we have a totally new area, full of new buildings, I simply want to celebrate this change.

FS: Who is the target customer for his design?
DC: I think that everyone involved with design, architecture, 3D printing could be a perfect target for this kind of design

FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
DC: I've simply used a 3D modeling software and a 3d printer, nothing else

FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
DC: for me telling a story in my design products is a very important part of the creation process... this product tells many stories at the same time.

FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
DC: designer Andrea Croci from Idea Factory has been my partner for the technical drawings and working together on this concept has been very interesting

FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
DC: as a 3d printed object, technology plays a principal role during the development of the concept. props have been so much supporting in the development of the final product that I could'nt imagine the born of my design without this kind of technology.

FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
DC: The hardest part of this project has surely been to find the exact monuments like traditional pieces for filling a chessboard. The choice has been made over some buildings with the right proportions and a style variation that was interesting and innovating at the same time.

FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
DC: I have been discovered by the organization and gently invited to partecipate.

FS: Thank you for providing us with this opportunity to interview you.
