DESIGN NAME: milan chess set
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Chess Game
INSPIRATION: The idea for this project came out from my personal experience as a designer and my childhood history. The skyline of Milan is really changed in the last ten years and a skyscrapers silhouette appeared in the central part of the city. Where once my father brought me to the Luna Park, today we have a new area full of new buildings. Melting the concept of the part of the city where I live and the memory of my father teaching me to play chess, I decided to put all the buildings on a chessboard.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This project tells a story about the evolution of a european modern city, is able to let imagine how interesting is the connecting between ancient and modern monuments, exactly like it happens between ancient and modern cultural traditions. It represents a bridge from the past to the future in a very special 2015, where the interaction between different cultures has been so important during the Expo semester.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: the chess board filled with all the 32 monuments is a very singular peace for indoor design use. If you are a professional chess player, it will be very funny seeing all these little monuments dancing around on the chessboard during your game.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in Milan in January 2015 with the first sketches and has been showed for the first time at Salone del Mobile in April 2015.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The entire project has been conceived from the first idea with this new technology of 3-D printing and this choice was really the perfect one, because the method of printing all these little objects is very quick and available in every part of the world. Sintered nylon is a very new and modern material and gives to this project a very new appeal and a very fresh touching sensation.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: There is a very interesting and mutual research about miniaturization of monuments, cities, and geographical wonders all around the world. In every country we can find some objects which are designed likes souvenirs or representation of another reality. Cities like Las Vegas are full of this idea about taking some other places monuments in one single place. So my research has been done in this direction.
CHALLENGE: The hardest part of this project has surely been to find the exact monuments like traditional pieces for filling a chessboard. The choice has been made over some buildings with the right proportions and a style variation that was interesting and innovating at the same time.
