Interview with Jeffrey A Day at Thursday 10th of September 2015 FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design? JD: To take a simple occurrence like oil in water and give it a different perspective. FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design? JD: I am to offer this bench as part of a "family of products" on my website so that people may purchase them. FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept? JD: From concept to prototype was about 4-5 months. FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration? JD: Totally inspiration driven, I find my best work is inspired. Although commissioned inspiration would be ideal! FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself? JD: I intend to offer this line through Day-Studios.com. FS: What made you design this particular type of work? JD: I feel it is a valid, contemporary design idea... I wanted people to enjoy it. FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work? JD: We all stand on the shoulders of giants. That being said I have been influenced by all the designers and designs that came before this one. FS: Who is the target customer for his design? JD: Anyone that appreciates contemporary deign, hopefully from all walks of life. FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts? JD: Some furniture disappears after time, its just another function of out daily lives. My hope is that this will grab peoples attention more frequently. FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean? JD: Its very matter of fact... its h20 and oil: H2Oil FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project? JD: Solid Works, Adobe CS, CNC, good old fashioned hand tools. FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design? JD: the organic shapes of the surface. FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills? JD: na FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design? JD: Technology plays a huge role in most of my designs, this was no different. From design iterations to CNC output, technology is truly my partner. FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design? JD: na FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept? JD: The largest challenge was to realize the casted leg using small foundries. There was a learning curve there for sure. FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition? JD: I felt the design was credible enough garner the attention of fellow designers. I want to share it with the community as well as build my own brand. FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work? JD: I learned the skills of how to design for casting with pattern makers. An old and still relevant skill.
