| DESIGN NAME: H20il PRIMARY FUNCTION: Bench and Occasional Table INSPIRATION: Very simply I wanted to capture the look and feel of oil floating on water. We experience oil on water frequently in our lives with food preparation to industrial settings with machinery. I wanted to highlight this by changing proportions, materials and locations. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: H20il is a laminated hardwood Bench/Table that relies on the precision of a CNC router to carefully realize the design intent. Using two species of wood creates the feel of how oil reacts in water. I like how they interact with each other with the less dense oil always floating to the top. The custom legs created for this bench is cast in a small foundry with green sand. The aluminum leg is a solid 1.8 kilogram with three countersink mounting points. The legs are offered in Brushed, Hammered and Raw with flashing still attached. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: This product is versatile in application, it can be used as a bench or coffee table virtually anywhere in a dwelling or office. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: H2Oil started in February 2015 in Seattle WA and finished in July 2015 in Seattle WA. FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY: Furniture Design |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The surface of the design is straight forward, laminated hardwood using species types as color differentiator. The custom legs took time and care to realize the design intent. As the process went along with a pattern maker the “feel” of the legs remained the same but methodology for manufacturing changed to meet the requirements for casting a consistently. Observations were made examining various types of scenarios of oil and liquid interacting to create the top laminated wood bench. The acquired knowledge came from experts with foundry experience and Pattern Makers to achieve the custom legs. CHALLENGE: The creative challenge was to create a natural looking pattern that captures how oil and water interact with each other.
