Interview with Payam Fahemi & Samira Kharazan at Saturday 23rd of April 2016

FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
PF: 1. Seeing as we have been living in Italy for a quiet while, we thought why don’t we come up with an idea as a flexibale structure located in the squares. Peaple deserve to experience new urban spaces. Therefore, we designed this purposeful structure not only for the squares but also for a variety of aims. Howevere the project had been formerly started by a client’request in Iran. As a matter of fact we have developed it as is seen.

FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
PF: 2. Manipulating historical spaces needs to be purposeful and wary. Therefore we wanted to make our project engaged with urban spaces so that it harms less. Considering those worries, flexibility and simpilicity were two major factors which had to be taken into account.

FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
PF: As it is one of the most prestigious awards in architecture, it enhances our opportunity for our professional careers. In other words, actualizing it is our priority in the future.

FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
PF: We had put a lot of effort on it approximately 7 months, howevere it was not constantly.

FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
PF: As I told you this design had been commissioned before we enrolled it in this competition.

FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
PF: No, it is not being used by nobody, however we will be pleased if somebody invests on it.

FS: What made you design this particular type of work?
PF: Firstly it was requested, since then we realise it would be such an enthralling experience to participate in one of the architectural competition, and that was the reason why we developed the primary draft.

FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
PF: Actually two of our professors at the university helped us but it was not directly. They mentioned some actionable advices.

FS: Who is the target customer for his design?
PF: Being flexible in component of structure, it can be used for a variety of functions. People, cultural administrations and so forth are our targets.

FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
PF: The futuristic material used in each component can be taken into account as an upside.

FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
PF: Due to its bifunctionality in two different weather conditions ( e.g. cold and warm seasons ) we have chosen Sunshade-Deck. In the warm seasons we need shades, therefore we use it as a sunshader. Conversly, in the wet seasons it becomes as a deck to cover pools.

FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
PF: Auto cad, Photoshop, Rhinoceros 5,… were used.

FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
PF: Being easy to assemble and transport it into the location.

FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
PF: Actually, one of our professors was a civil engineer who helped us to resovle some structural problems and calculations.

FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
PF: Technology has taken its roll in some aspect of it such as applied materials. As it was mentioned the futuristic one.

FS: Thank you for providing us with this opportunity to interview you.
