Interview with Pablo Saracho at Sunday 15th of March 2015

FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
PS: Nature and simplicity

FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
PS: A real surprise effect. When putting together all the different parts with a mechanical look you get to an animal of very clean lines and design.

FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
PS: Go for the next!

FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
PS: The first design was very fast, a few weeks, but achieving the final prototypes was longer than 6 months

FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
PS: I wanted something very natural and a new way of understanding a toy not so childish

FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
PS: We produce our own goods.

FS: What made you design this particular type of work?
PS: A new way of understanding this moment in my life. It is what I always wanted to do and I have been lucky enough to have the slot in my life to do it.

FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
PS: Yes my wife and partner Mayte

FS: Who is the target customer for his design?
PS: Children from 5 to 100. Design lovers. Wood lovers.

FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
PS: From my point of view is the combination of design + the surprise of the "puzzle like" toy.

FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
PS: Is a tribute to the animals that weigh more than 700 kg. It is what they all have in common, besides the body!!

FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
PS: Many paper sheets and pencils, 3d CAD and CAM and a SCM CNC router.

FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
PS: It is my clients to tell. We like to think it is a combination of things you do not find in other wooden toys.

FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
PS: Carpenters.

FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
PS: It is very relevant in order to produce quality at a reasonable price.

FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
PS: We are in constant search benchmarking via the internet: Instagram, Pinterest, shops, words related, recommendations from people, magazines, awards...

FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
PS: They need to be different, producible and it must be based on the aims of high quality and good value for money

FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
PS: There are two different aims: it is a good way to help the objective of becoming worldwide known and the other is that we wanted to test the quality of our products.

FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
PS: Not being afraid of redoing it and starting from zero again as many times as needed.

FS: Thank you for providing us with this opportunity to interview you.
