DESIGN NAME: Mastodonts
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Toy
INSPIRATION: How could I mix together minimal designs plus mechanics to create new and different toys? And always having as a target being 100% natural. From the attraction to wood to "what if the wood attracts itself to build different toys?"
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: It is a family of wooden magnetic toys. Minimalistic design. No plastic, paint, varnish, nor glue. From one body you can build four animals by changing heads, mouths and ears. You cannot see the different animals until you put all the pieces together. It is all beech wood and magnets. It is finished with wax made of olive oil and beeswax. It is all presented in a box made of poplar and cardboard beds for the pieces. We also include a cloth and a tin of wax to maintain the Mastodonts.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: It just need imagination to build it, that is because there is no instructions with it.
The wood has magnets embed that helps to join the pieces and assemble the animal. Remember that is one body with 4 different heads to choose.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in April 2011 in Segovia, Spain. It finished in May 2014 in Segovia, Spain.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: We design on paper. Then we redesign using a 3D software to verify: measures, mechanisms, balances, resistances etc. Then we translate it into CAM software so that a CNC machine can drill it from the beech wood board that has already been cut, planned and sanded. We separate the pieces from the board by sanding them, and we need a new hand sanding for the finish. The magnets are inserted into the wood by pressure. All the pieces are waxed (beeswax and olive oil cooked by us) and polished.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Research on wooden toys was a first step. We visited cities where wooden animals are a market trend and collected toys and references to analyze: what matters, finishing, production methods/countries, prices. We found a gap between toys and design; animals as a common denominator, but mainly puzzles or figures. Axes were: 100 percent natural and surprising, if not together you see nothing, wood and magnets to be a building toy. Result: 22 pieces, 1 body, 4 animals. Test with real kids was final.
CHALLENGE: Design challenges: to design wooden pieces that when all apart seem mechanical pieces but when you put them together they are 4 animals that share the same body. Production challenge: use CNC machinery to produce in Europe; having to invent non-existing mechanisms and processes; in Spain is really expensive and difficult to start a company moreover a factory. Price challenge: to be able to fit a high quality product into market prices (we deal with a lot of intermediaries that rise prices).
