Editor Frank Scott (FS) from DesignPRWire has interviewed designer Tom Kerpert (TK) for A' Design Awards and Competition. You can access the full profile of Tom Kerpert by clicking here. Access more information about the award winning design Dog Kennel here.

Interview with Tom Kerpert at Tuesday 17th of April 2012

FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
TK: The idea and inspiration was to provide a comfortable "cave"for the animal

FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
TK: The kennel had to be inviting to the animal and had to provide a comfortable and save environment and protection from the element. At the same time portability and ease of maintenance where key concerns.

FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
TK: My client is actively looking for licensing partners overseas

FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
TK: The design process took approximately 3 month

FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
TK: I was commissioned by the client to re-invent the dog kennel.

FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
TK: The kennel is currently in production in South Africa and licensing is available for overseas markets

FS: What made you design this particular type of work?
TK: Being a dog owner myself I was unable to find a suitable kennel on the market

FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
TK: This design was completely created in-house from concept to final parts

FS: Who is the target customer for his design?
TK: Any dog owner around the world

FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
TK: The kennel can easily be assembled or dismantled for transport. In addition the roof can be removed without tools for cleaning and maintenance. The double wall design delivers excellent insulation from low and high temperatures. A future upgrade to underfloor heating by filling the base tray with water and insertion of a low voltage element has been kept in mind during the initial design process.

FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
TK: All work was done by 3D modelling software

FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
TK: The potential upgrade to underfloor heating in colder climates

FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
TK: All design and engineering was done in-house.

FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
TK: Rota-molding was chosen to manufacture this design at an early stage in the design process and the design was optimized for this particular process

FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
TK: I thought the concept was unique and this was an opportunity to present it to a wider audience

FS: Thank you for providing us with this opportunity to interview you.
