Interview with Franck Giral at Sunday 30th of June 2024 FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design? FG: We wanted to design a structure that would appear relatively light, and also with a blend of horizontal and vertical lines. We also had to deal with other factors, like privacy between buildings, capturing the forest views, etc... FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve? FG: We wanted to achieve somenthing elegant that uses local construction methods. FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design? FG: Have it built. FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept? FG: It took roughly 10 months from concept to construction drawings. FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration? FG: This design was commissioned by our client, the developer. FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself? FG: This product, as of July 2024, is under construction, and completion of at least 2 villas are planned for December 2024. The project is being sold by the developer. FS: What made you design this particular type of work? FG: Our core clientele is either developer or individuals of ski rental properties in Niseko, Hokkaido, Japan. FS: Who is the target customer for his design? FG: The buyers are wealthy individuals who want a ski rental property near the ski hills. FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts? FG: We tried as much as possiblel to stay away from properties in the vicinity. The short cantilevered roofs, the short balconies and the skii floor are all features rarely seen. FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design? FG: The high slanted ceiling in the living space, surrounded by loft windows, which makes a very bright space open on the surrounding forest. FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design? FG: We intensively used Revit, for the architectural, but also for the structural design. This helped us check the design in 3D and check all corners of the property. FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition? FG: We believe in this project and our design, and thought we had a fair chance. FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work? FG: This was a first for a small team of foreigners working in Japan, so it is an achievement to not only complete the design but have it being built. We are ready for more complicated projects.
