Interview with Rodrigo Berlim at Tuesday 9th of July 2024 FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design? RB: the main idea was to have a chair that could be stored without taking up too much space FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve? RB: I wanted it to be a beautiful, comfortable and foldable piece and especially simple to use FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design? RB: I would like to produce on a large scale FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept? RB: took 4 months of development FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration? RB: It was something I already wanted to design, then a client arrived with this need FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself? RB: my intentios is to lease the production rights FS: What made you design this particular type of work? RB: It was from an office client who needed a chair for an interchangeable space FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work? RB: no one FS: Who is the target customer for his design? RB: simple to store FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts? RB: auto_awesome VocĂȘ quis dizer: se diferencia pela simplicidade, beleza e ergonomia 52 / 5.000 It stands out for its simplicity, beauty and ergonomics. FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean? RB: some friend suggested using the fusion of words foldable ( dobravel in portuguese) with gaia FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project? RB: 3d softwares, router cnc, 3d printers, hand tools FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design? RB: The curvature of the chair's back and seat is finished with a manually carved FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills? RB: no one FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design? RB: manufacturing assistance FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design? RB: I checked several chairs, looking for examples of comfortable angles to spend hours sitting without needing cushions. FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept? RB: create the hinges FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition? RB: I thought that because it was a very different example from what was already available globally, it might have a chance at the award FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work? RB: I learned to master the 3D printing process to help develop the chair FS: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions? RB: none
