OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
The operation of this chair starts by opening the back legs and then rotating the seat until it fits in the locking pins, getting it ready to sit down

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project started its development in april 2023, building the first prototype that required adjustments to the seat and backrest angles, the second prototype validated the angles and allowed working on the development of the components, the final version of the chair was ready in august 2023, with the test of plastic components

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
The chair is basically made of cedar, its legs and backrest are cut using a cnc machine, the seat is cut manually, both the seat and the backrest have a concavity and are handcrafted using planes to give the feeling of a handmade product, the components of axles and locks are made through 3d printer with biodegradable PLA plastic filament

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
Most of the folding chairs available on the market have a rectilinear design, which only prioritizes practicality and not comfort, so we returned to the project to develop something comfortable and elegant for a sophisticated environment.

CHALLENGE:
the biggest challenge of the project was to create something ultra simple, that didn't need fasteners and buttons to use, the development of the axis of rotation for the hind legs was a completely customized system to be able to follow the concept of simplicity and with that to develop the system of locking the legs using the seat

The ingenuity and thoughtfulness behind the "Velga" folding chair truly exemplifies the pinnacle of innovation in furniture design, especially when considering the challenges of modern living spaces. The approach to blend functionality with elegance, utilizing cedar wood and biodegradable PLA plastic, not only addresses the need for space-saving solutions but does so with an aesthetic grace that elevates any environment it graces. The meticulous research and development process, aiming to transcend the common rectilinear design of folding chairs by focusing on comfort without compromising the sophistication of its form, showcases a remarkable dedication to crafting a product that is both practical and visually appealing. The realization methods, particularly the use of CNC machines for precision alongside the artisanal touch of handcrafted concavities, highlight a harmonious marriage between technology and traditional craftsmanship. Moreover, the innovative design challenge to eliminate fasteners and buttons, culminating in a bespoke axis of rotation and leg-locking system, signifies a leap towards simplicity and user-centric design. This work not only stands as a testament to the possibilities of modern furniture design but also serves as an inspiration for future innovations in the field. The recognition of this project with the A' Design Award is a well-deserved accolade for the creative prowess and visionary approach of Rodrigo Berlim.
