Interview with Hu Chen at Friday 19th of May 2023 FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve? HC: The work is located in the old city of Guangzhou, a traditional commercial area, and also within the top 10 pedestrian streets of the country's shopping districts, where tourists are mostly found. The design focuses on the needs of several aspects of business, culture, history and tourism. The work should represent the traditional and modern business of Guangzhou, at the same time, it is also the image representative of the shopping district pedestrian street. FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration? HC: The concept of flower is used in the design. This is because Guangzhou is also known as the City of Flowers, the city where hundreds of flowers bloom. Since the design contract was won through a competition, it was the result of my pursuit of inspiration. FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean? HC: As a Guangzhou resident, "Grandbuy" is as dear to the hearts of the old Guangzhou people. "Grandbuy" is the abbreviation of Guangzhou Department Store, and "Flower City" is the alias of Guangzhou, which is known all over China, so "Flourishing Grandbuy" is used as the name of the design, which means Guangzhou's Grandbuy, the flower of the city of flowers blooms in Grandbuy. FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design? HC: All commercial design projects are influenced by data or analytical studies, and this design is no exception. For this design I conducted more than ten different dimensions of research such as passenger flow studies at different times of the day during holidays, passenger flow gender studies, and indoor passenger flow thermal radiation studies. FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition? HC: When the company had accumulated a certain number of cases, I decided to choose some awards with international influence to submit, through the Internet and multiple information from professional associations, and then make a submission.
