Interview with Albert Potgieter at Tuesday 24th of May 2022 FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design? AP: I wanted to build on a previous design but bring in the solid top in way that is different and still incorporates the different pieces of wood. FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve? AP: I wanted to combine the art world and the functional furniture world a bit more. Bringing in the solid top but still keeping the visual aspect of the art world. FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design? AP: I want to see it in more homes and also continue to build on this design. FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept? AP: About three weeks. FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration? AP: It was a pursuit of an inspiration FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself? AP: The production of this design is done by myself. All my work is handmade. The selling and marketing of this product is done by me or by galleries that represent me. FS: What made you design this particular type of work? AP: I designed this piece because of an inspiration and for dutch design week that was coming up FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work? AP: No I designed and built it myself FS: Who is the target customer for his design? AP: The Art lover. It is an functional art piece. Designed to be functional as a furniture piece but also on the other side be inspirational and change the atmosphere of your house. FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts? AP: It is built up out of different small pieces of hard wood. Every piece of wood can be seen individually, but together it creates a totally different look. Also I incorporated the process of steam bending giving the wood pieces a special bend that you wont get otherwise. FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean? AP: It came from the goal that I wanted to achieve with this design, being to bring the furniture and art worlds together in one design. The name Moja is Swahili for Unity. FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project? AP: I used paper and pencil and the rest was done visually and by building and making changes as I go along. FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design? AP: The visual aspect and that it is built up by a lot of little hardwood pieces. FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills? AP: No I designed and built it myself FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design? AP: With this particular design I didn’t use so much technology. This piece was designed with paper and pencil, put together with glue and all handmade. FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design? AP: No It was a progression on a previous design and made from an inspiration. FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept? AP: The steam bending and getting everything glued together perfectly is challenging. FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition? AP: I wanted to take a chance and see what others out there think of it. Seeing how it holds up against other designs. Call it research if you will. FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work? AP: I learnt a new technique, steam bending and how wood reacts to tension and that different kinds of wood reacts differently. I also learnt that there is an infinite amount of designs to discover, leading me to continually designing new pieces. FS: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions? AP: No this is great thanks
