Interview with Vincent Hsieh at Sunday 15th of May 2022

FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
HD: We have been trapped during pandemic and long for a trip. Thus setting a scene of tropical beach in this city centre restaurant is our biggest goal. A restaurant pub is a place to meet friends, drink and dine, to relax after a long day stress. People always feel totally relaxed in a natural environment. Widely-used exotic plants, aged woods and real coral sand, magically bring diners into a vacation experience.

FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
HD: This restaurant design focused on creating an atmosphere that feels like relaxing at an island country beach bar, where guests can experience an exotic outdoor dinning experience in a city basement. The place is divided into five zones: lounge in the sand, island beach bar, rock cave dinning, garden cafe and jungle seat box, which allow returned customers to enjoy different atmosphere every time they dine in.

FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
HD: For the first time, five ecological areas including beaches, jungles and deserts were moved to a basement next to Taiwan 101. In the metropolitan area, it can be said to be the perfect combination of Chicken Wing Bar crossover the most instagram-able popular cafe.

FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
HD: The project started in September 2020 and finished in February 2021 in Taipei, and was officially opened in March 2021. It took around 5 months from design to construction complete.

FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
HD: This is a client's project.

FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
HD: This is a restaurant so I think this question is not relevant.

FS: What made you design this particular type of work?
HD: Taiwan is an island country, designers are familiar with the creation of a natural environment; however, the biggest challenge is to copy the atmosphere of the natural environment into a concrete house. This requires a lot of imagination and hands on construction experience. The experience of engineering supervision is the reason for the successful transformation.

FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
HD: Fallingwater is a house designed by the architect Frank Lloyd Wright in 1935 in the Laurel Highlands of southwest Pennsylvania, about 70 miles southeast of Pittsburgh. It is built partly over a waterfall. I admire the architect’s passion in the importance of interpenetrating exterior and interior spaces and the strong emphasis placed on harmony between man and nature. The boulders and trees of the original terrain are still preserved inside the building. From the appearance of the house, the interior design to all furnitures and even tablewares, all completed by the architect - incredible comprehensive design ability.

FS: Who is the target customer for his design?
HD: This restaurant is children-friendly and pet-friendly, already opened for guests and become very popular in Taiwan. This unique indoor environment is also perfect for commercial events in rainy Taipei, collaborated brands include Prada, LG and LINE TV, etc.

FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
HD: Material use is a key issue to this project. To enhance the atmosphere of the space without any help of the best mood creator, sunlight and humid, loads of aged woods were used: weathered, raw wooden blocks that had no additional retouch, even unwanted tree trunks were modified by hand and widely use in the space.

FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
HD: It's the name of the restaurant.

FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
HD: Accumulated experience in life. When interacting with clients, you will naturally feel the aura presented by them. It’s amazing. I have no idea when I start having this ability, to naturally capture the material and atmosphere suitable for my clients. Surprisingly, I have the same feeling when choosing building materials, I also feel that the materials are also interacting with me their preferred way to be presented.

FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
HD: The use of materials and the recreation of space.

FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
HD: Mainly the restaurant owner

FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
HD: In consideration of pubic safety, a complete fire protection system that meets nowadays' safety requirement was added into the old building's already complex pipe system.

FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
HD: Pinterest and Instagram to understand the trend of instagram-able photos and sites.

FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
HD: There are two big challenges. One of them is to create a relaxing atmosphere under a complex pipe system. The other challenge is a lot of natural materials were used in this indoor space, most of the effort is spent on overcoming various specifications.

FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
HD: I know this is a good design that worth recognition.

FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
HD: Taiwan is an island country, designers are familiar with the creation of a natural environment; however, the biggest challenge is to copy the atmosphere of the natural environment into a concrete house. This requires a lot of imagination and hands on construction experience. The experience of engineering supervision is the reason for the successful transformation.

FS: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions?
HD: Companies can speak their minds boldly when cooperating with designers. Companies should select designers who are careful and patient, willing to listen, patiently communicate, and willing to try.
