Timeless Kitchen by Alustil Sdn Bhd

Home > Winners > Design #119969 >Interview
Editor Frank Scott (FS) from DesignPRWire has interviewed designer Alustil Sdn Bhd (AS) for A' Design Awards and Competition. You can access the full profile of Alustil Sdn Bhd by clicking here. Access more information about the award winning design Timeless here.

Interview with Alustil Sdn Bhd at Monday 10th of May 2021

FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
AS: The main inspiration behind this design is nature, water streaming down the window in particular. The water streams are curated into the kitchen through the distinctive lines of the shelving, door handles, pops of colours, surface engraving and pendant lampshade.

FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
AS: The main focus of designing this work was on manufacturing techniques and materials used to achieve as close to the design as possible with maximised functionality, durability, and elegance.

FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
AS: The award-winning design will be one of Alustil’s publicity tool or star design for the year 2021.

FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
AS: The overall process from design concept to the finished kitchen takes five months.

FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
AS: Alustil is a kitchen manufacturer, and we aimed to leap into a new milestone of craftsmanship and design detailing. So, we commissioned Chris Bosse, an architect known for his works on the Watercube, National Aquatic Centre in Beijing and his aptitude for translating nature into architecture and design.

FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
AS: Alustil Sdn Bhd has the production rights to the Timeless kitchen. The first kitchen was produced in March 2020 and exhibited at The 22nd China (Guangzhou) International Building Decoration Fair in July 2020.

FS: What made you design this particular type of work?
AS: This Timeless kitchen is made in hopes to elevate every ordinary cook space into a kitchen masterpiece.

FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
AS: Chris Bosse, the architect, is the main designer for this Timeless kitchen. We work with a local art director to visually uphold the design and our technical and manufacturing team to solve materials issues and realise the design.

FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
AS: 1. Engraving the vertical lines deep enough to create a v-shaped valley on the already thin compact panels used on door panels and waterfall worktop of the island without compromising its structural strength. 2. Finding suitable materials to replace the wood of the pendant lamp to increase transparency, so it resembles a cloud more than the original material designed. 3. Applying the designer's signature colour, Lava Green, with paint on to the powder-coated aluminium handles so that the paint could stick, withstand scratches and prolong its colour.

FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
AS: We love the outcome of this design and are proud of it, so we decided to share this Timeless kitchen within the design world to see how we do.

FS: Thank you for providing us with this opportunity to interview you.
