| DESIGN NAME: Timeless PRIMARY FUNCTION: Kitchen INSPIRATION: Kitchen is the heart of a home, not just for food preparation but also as a communication hub and mini working space. We are inspired to elevate every ordinary cook space into a kitchen masterpiece. Incorporating a timeless elegance, this Timeless kitchen entails a touch of nature expressed through vertical lines inspired by water streaming down a window. The water streams are curated into the kitchen through the distinctive lines of the shelving, door handles, pops of colours, surface engraving and pendant lampshade. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Timeless is a combination of artistry, functionality, durability, customisability and elegance in a kitchen. The design entails a touch of nature expressed through vertical lines inspired by water streaming down a window. The vertical lines of the shelving, handles, pops of colours, surface engravings, and lampshade is the expression of the water streams. The base cabinets are made of aluminium, for known its structural strength and environmental features. The cabinet interior is refined with edgeless corners for easy cleaning, and peg holes and brackets allow flexible shelf height. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Timeless kitchen opens up to more eating, prepping, cooking and entertaining space than imaginable, with the kitchen island in the foreground while showcasing a clean, modern wall of cabinetry with a minimalistic pantry, enclosed storage and open shelving in the background. Users could experience daily life with functionality and elegance all at once. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Project started November 2019 in Sydney, Australia and finish in March 2020 in Johor, Malaysia, and was exhibited on July 2020 in Guangzhou, China at the CBD FAIR (GUANGZHOU) 2020 - THE 22nd China (Guangzhou) International Building Decoration Fair. |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Powder-coated aluminium cabinet carcase, body and handles. Powder-coated metal and clear glass for open shelves. Compact panels on door panels, worktops and cabinet sides. Engraved compact panels with a new technique to create the v-shaped valley without compromising its structural strength. Painted Lava Green on powder-coated aluminium handles and coated with a protective layer to withstand scratches and reduce wear and tear. Acrylic ribs for the pendant lamp shade to increase transparency and to resemble the cloud. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Timeless Wall of Cabinet Dimension: 4672mm x 615mm x 2500mm Timeless Island Dimension: 3040mm x 800mm x 2500mm TAGS: Aluminium Kitchens, Kitchen Design, Sustainable Kitchens, Customisable, Kitchen Furniture, Nature RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The design research was based on translating the reminiscence of water into the design and realising it with features of the materials used without compromising functionality, durability, and elegance. The production research was focused on manufacturing techniques to achieve the design and maximising the functionality, durability, elegance of materials and craft the components into a kitchen masterpiece. CHALLENGE: Challenges include 1. Engraving the vertical lines deep enough to create v-shaped valley on the already thin compact panels used on door panels and waterfall worktop of the island without compromising its structural strength. 2. Finding suitable materials to replace the wood of the pendant lamp to increase transparency so it resembles a cloud more than the original material designed. 3. Applying the designer's signature colour, Lava Green, with paint on to the powder-coated aluminium handles so that the paint could stick, withstand scratches and prolong its colour.
