Editor Frank Scott (FS) from DesignPRWire has interviewed designer Jiaxing Guo (SG) for A' Design Awards and Competition. You can access the full profile of Jiaxing Guo by clicking here. Access more information about the award winning design Silver Siren here.

Interview with Jiaxing Guo at Friday 5th of July 2024

FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
SG: “Silver Siren” is a handmade speaker project inspired by Sirens. In Greek mythology, Sirens, these mythical beings were famed for their mesmerizing music and voices, which they used to entice sailors into shipwrecks upon the treacherous shores of their islands. In myth, Sirens were portrayed as hybrids of women and birds, assuming various forms. Often, they were imagined as breathtakingly beautiful women, seductive not only through their voices but through their very forms. This project seeks to encapsulate the allure and danger of these mythical figures, translating their enchanting legacy into a modern auditory experience.

FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
SG: I was focusing on achieving a perfect surface. So it took me a lot of time to get it right.

FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
SG: I'm planning to make it into a collection that shares the same concept.

FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
SG: It took me a few days to design and 3d modeling it. Then took me a few weeks to make the physical model.

FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
SG: It was not a commission work and I designed it for myself. I was trying to design a different speaker model than the products on the market.

FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
SG: Not yet. Currently I'm using it to participate some design exhibitions. I'm planning to make it into a more consumer-friendly model so I can make profit from it.

FS: What made you design this particular type of work?
SG: My desire of beautiful forms.

FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
SG: I got a few inspiration and references from B&W speakers.

FS: Who is the target customer for his design?
SG: People who enjoy music and good design.

FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
SG: An organic form that is not often on speaker design.

FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
SG: Silver Siren. In Greek mythology, Sirens, these mythical beings were famed for their mesmerizing music and voices, which they used to entice sailors into shipwrecks upon the treacherous shores of their islands.

FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
SG: Rhino, Laser cutter, sand paper, paintgun.

FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
SG: I think it is the form that makes my design unique.

FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
SG: I worked on it by myself.

FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
SG: I used 3D programs to make a visualization so I could have a better understanding of the whole shape.

FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
SG: Not date or analytical research. The only research I did was the forms of speakers on the market.

FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
SG: It was hard to have a perfect smooth surface.

FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
SG: A design Award has a good reputation and I want more people to know about my design.

FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
SG: I improved my sanding and painting skills. Also my patient was getting better.

FS: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions?
SG: I like to design things differently!

FS: Thank you for providing us with this opportunity to interview you.
