DESIGN NAME: Silver Siren
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Speaker
INSPIRATION: My inspiration is the Siren, which is the mythological creature in the sea. In Greek mythology, Sirens were dangerous creatures who lured nearby sailors with their enchanting music and singing voices to shipwreck on the rocky coast of their island. They were sometimes depicted as beautiful women, whose bodies, not only their voices, are seductive. Enchanting but dangerous, isn’t Siren excellent imagery of a beautiful, mysterious speaker with a fluid, organic form? I tried to capture Sirens' moment leaning on the rock, singing and waiting for sailors—also the color and the movement of ocean waves.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: There is a control penal on the side of the speaker. You could connect to your audio devices by Bluetooth or AUX cable.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in Jan 2019 in Los Angeles and finished in August 2019.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: I designed the form and the speaker/amplifier enclosures in Rhinoceros. Then laser cut MDF to make a section model. Glue pieces together and sand it to smooth. Then painted primer/automotive paints/clearcoat and assembled all the parts.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: I looked into different art pieces and literature about the siren to feel and analyze the imageries of sirens. Then visualized them by a couple of sketches.
CHALLENGE: During the development/realization phase, the challenge is how to make the organic form of the speaker and the layout of the internal electronics. I chose to make a section model, which is layers of MDF board, to lower the cost, and also, that would be an easy way to make the inner structure. For the internal electronics, I made a slide to easily take all the parts out of the main body if some components are broken.
