Editor Frank Scott (FS) from DesignPRWire has interviewed designer Rui Ma (RM) for A' Design Awards and Competition. You can access the full profile of Rui Ma by clicking here. Access more information about the award winning design Protect Biodiversity here.

Interview with Rui Ma at Sunday 23rd of January 2022

FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
RM: The inspiration was from a film about saving the world by protecting the environment. By educating myself on how to protect biodiversity, I created a series of posters to raise awareness of conserving biodiversity through visual communication design.

FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
RM: I always believe that good design helps people’s life and contribute to making the world better. That’s my goal to achieve as a designer.

FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
RM: I would like to submit this design to more publications so that people would see it.

FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
RM: From research to production, estimably several months.

FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
RM: Sustainability is a subject that people always talk about. I have been educating myself and researching this subject, my goal is to create more designs about sustainability.

FS: What made you design this particular type of work?
RM: Poster design is a good way to visually communicate with the audience. For a sustainable purpose, digital posters are a great option instead of the printing technique.

FS: Who is the target customer for his design?
RM: The public.

FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
RM: These posters are designed in two languages, English and Chinese. This helps get more people's attention.

FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
RM: “Eight ways to protect biodiversity”. It is straightforward and presents the concept of the design.

FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
RM: Adobe Creative Suite.

FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
RM: It's innovative, haven’t seen a poster design list and visualize the ways of protecting biodiversity in two different languages.

FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
RM: Just myself.

FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
RM: The design was created entirely digital and paperless. In this way, the production would be without a physical printing process, and the audiences can view it through the internet.

FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
RM: Conducted research online from Google, chose from subjects, decided the categories, had conversations with others if they realize the problems, considered what would be the best/most sustainable way to produce the design.

FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
RM: The most challenging part of this project would be the selection of subjects. There are plenty of environmental problems that we need to pay attention to. In the end, I decided to choose the subject: ways to protect biodiversity, because biodiversity provides healthy ecosystems that are really important to the earth.

FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
RM: I would like the design and the concept to be recognized by the world and more people.

FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
RM: To create more sustainability designs.

FS: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions?
RM: I hope more sustainability design would be created and benefit the world.

FS: Thank you for providing us with this opportunity to interview you.
