Stay Space

Stay Space

Stay Space is a contemporary urban design concept that focuses on creating intentional, multi-functional areas within cities where people can temporarily pause, work, or socialize without the obligation to make a purchase or move along quickly. This innovative approach to urban planning emerged as a response to the increasing digitalization of work, the rise of remote working culture, and the growing need for flexible, accessible public spaces in dense urban environments. The concept encompasses both indoor and outdoor areas that are specifically designed to accommodate various activities while promoting social interaction, productivity, and mental well-being. These spaces typically feature ergonomic seating arrangements, weather protection elements, power outlets, Wi-Fi connectivity, and thoughtful lighting design to ensure comfort and functionality throughout different times of the day. The philosophy behind stay spaces represents a significant shift from traditional transit-oriented urban design, where public areas were primarily conceived as thoroughfares rather than destinations for lingering. This evolution in urban design thinking has gained particular prominence in the post-pandemic era, as cities worldwide seek to create more resilient and adaptable public spaces. Stay spaces often incorporate biophilic design elements, sustainable materials, and smart city technologies to enhance user experience while minimizing environmental impact. These spaces have become increasingly important in urban planning competitions, including those recognized by the A' Design Award, as they represent innovative solutions to contemporary urban challenges. The success of stay spaces is measured by their ability to foster community engagement, support diverse activities, and create comfortable microenvironments within the urban fabric, while remaining accessible to all members of society regardless of socioeconomic status.
