In today's society people's spirits are constantly suppressed by all the rules in order for the modern world to function. We Set Sail's music allows people to tap into their inner emotions or in this case their inner "ANIMAL" spirit. The goal was to illustrate the different contrasts of the music by blending different animals with paint clouds. Predators were used to show the aggression within the music and grazing animals were used to show the more elegant side of it.
Growing up in the South Africa, I was influenced from an early age by humble surroundings. It was here where I developed my imagination that would eventually fuel my Surrealistic style. Mostly known for my Photography and manipulation techniques, I like to focus on the subconscious. I want the viewer too finish each piece inside his/her mind. This results in an individualistic experience. It should be an inward journey, manifested as an emotional experience. After 10 years of working as a professional in both commercial and fine arts, I have received multiple awards for my work in Photo Manipulation and Mixed Media Illustration, of which the most prestigious was the 2014 & 2018 Platinum award for Photo Manipulation at the A’ Design Awards in Como, Italy. Alongside this I am the 2018 A’ Design Awards Designer of the Year.
We Set Sail was started in 2006 by Marné Gelderbloem, as a vehicle for his own stories and as an escape from the music then being played in Cape Town, South Africa. The songs tell stories, yet bear no words, instead conveying the emotions purely by the agreement of the instruments at play. The music is of a cinematic character, sometimes frail and delicate, and at other times urgent and explosive, creating a wide emotional spectrum, to which many a listener write their own words to. We Set Sail's nature is just that: that of an adventure into the unknown, setting sails with no definite port in sight, where many come and go, just like the tide's ebb and flow.
