SUMMARY: Our company creates individual jewelry based on parametric design, manufactured with rapid-prototyping. FURTHER DETAILS: For us, jewelry is not merely an everyday object. For us, jewelry is art. A wearable sculpture for the fingers, wrist, neck or ears. And just as contemporary art always reflects the current zeitgeist, our designs are likewise influenced by the new technical capabilities and myriad design options afforded to us by computers. For us, software is a digital pencil, one that preserves our vision and enables it to be tangibly realized in the next step. Dreaming up ideas, their illustration via computer, as well as their materialization via the so-called rapid prototyping design process, all result in an uncompromising design process virtually without limitations. monomer pursues the goal of creating jewelry which is wholly unique. monomer was founded by Antje Bott and Thomas Mrokon. By 2003, Thomas Mrokon had already developed parametric architectural concepts and investigated the technical possibilities offered by rapid prototyping. And since 2004, Antje Bott had been studying the idea of employing computers to generate parametric jewelry and employ the latest technology to render the physical result. This common design approach brought the two designers together when Antje Bott sought to transform the concept of highly personalized machine-fashioned jewelry – put forward in her thesis “loop” – into reality. The challenge of implementing this visionary approach was taken up by Thomas Mrokon. The result – which was developed into a concrete production-ready form for jewelry firm niessing and christened with the name “polymer” – garnered the red dot Award in the “Best of the Best” category in 2008. The next logical step was taken with monomer – a continually expanding jewelry collection customizable to the very highest degree. The different origins of the two designers has unceasingly served as a driving force behind new designs and concepts ever since.
