About Denise Ho : I have been a fashion stylist for the past 17 years, styled for Tier 1 magazines, celebrities such as James Franco, Luke Evans, and major brand campaigns. I created two fashion brands - kidswear label A for Apple in 2010 which first opened my eyes to the waste-generating manufacturing process, and knitwear brand Knotti in 2016 which used only biodegradable yarn and employed talented home knitters from various communities across Hong Kong. In 2018, I became the Fashion Director of upcycled fashion The R Collective. This journey developed me to endeavour to change the fashion industry by sharing stories and products with a strong emphasis on ethics and sustainability. STATEMENT OF ART:I created Kitdo because of my belief that true fashion sustainability is not in creating a new recycled item nor contributing to additional textile waste but in re-visioning and restyling existing pieces in one’s wardrobe, fulfilling the ultimate circular economy. The average person only wears 10-20% of their wardrobe. As a stylist, on set, we use safety pins, tape, and clips to get the right look out of the clothes on shoots, but these tools can easily ruin the fabric – particularly safety pins. It got me thinking about an alternative that also truly represents my ultimate vision of sustainable fashion. Kitdo expands your restyling options by creating new textures and shapes without putting holes in your clothes. It truly pushes the unlimited imagination of what’s possible with your wardrobe. Both art and design can be subjective to each individual. Having gone to art school for 4 years and worked in the design industry for 17 years, I believe art is more about the experience. It can be fluid and abstract. While design has an art element to it, it focuses more on the look, feel, and function. As design is usually applied to consumer products, having a good design can create a positive impact on the world.
