Interview with Andrew Chaoya Li at Monday 12th of June 2023
Andrew Chaoya Li
FS: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
ACL: As an originally trained engineer with a deep passion for design, I made a pivotal decision to pursue a degree in emerging media. This educational path allowed me to explore how technology can enable and enhance the field of design. Through this interdisciplinary approach, I developed a strong foundation in both design principles and technological applications. This unique combination fuels my passion for pushing the boundaries of creativity and leveraging technology to create impactful and innovative designs.

FS: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
ACL: Userly Labs is a creative studio specializing in software design consultancy. We provide creative design service for tech companies and also incubate products in house across diverse industries.

FS: What kinds of works do you like designing most?
ACL: I am particularly drawn to design solutions that leverage innovative technologies, such as AI and the metaverse. The intersection of design and cutting-edge technologies opens up exciting possibilities for creating products that transform people’s life. I enjoy exploring how these technologies can be harnessed to enhance user interactions, streamline processes, and push the boundaries of creativity.

FS: What was the first thing you designed for a company?
ACL: My first design project is an HR software solution for Siemens. The goal was to streamline the compensation allocation process across the organization. Despite its complexity, I successfully delivered a comprehensive and intuitive design that improved efficiency and reduced errors.

FS: When do you feel the most creative?
ACL: I feel the most creative when I have a cup of coffee in hand and find myself in a bright and quiet room with a spacious table. This setting provides me with a sense of focus and tranquility, allowing my creative thoughts to flow freely.

FS: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?
ACL: During the design process, I prioritize two key aspects: user experience and aesthetic appeal. I focus on creating seamless and intuitive experiences for users while ensuring visually captivating designs that align with the brand's essence.

FS: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?
ACL: When evaluating a design, I primarily consider two aspects: functionality and user experience. A good design should effectively meet its functional requirements and provide a seamless, engaging experience for users.

FS: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?
ACL: I find inspiration for my work by immersing myself in nature. Going out for hikes and meditating in the mountains rejuvenates my mind and sparks fresh creative ideas. The serene and natural environment serves as a direct source of inspiration for my design work.

FS: From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer?
ACL: Positives of being a designer include creative expression, problem-solving, and making a positive impact. Challenges include adapting to new trends, balancing creativity with practicality, and handling subjective feedback.

FS: What skills are most important for a designer?
ACL: Empathy is a crucial skill for a designer, enabling them to understand and connect with users' needs, emotions, and perspectives.

FS: Which tools do you use during design? What is inside your toolbox? Such as software, application, hardware, books, sources of inspiration etc.?
ACL: I used Photoshop, Figma and Illustrator.

FS: Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time?
ACL: When it comes to managing time consuming tasks, I prioritize and break down projects into smaller, manageable steps. I set realistic deadlines, utilize productivity tools, and collaborate effectively with clients and team members

FS: Who are some of your clients?
ACL: My clients include both large enterprises like Morgan Stanley and Farmers Insurance, as well as numerous small startups. This diverse range of clients has provided me with valuable experience across various industries and design challenges.

FS: How can people contact you?
ACL: Via email at andrewli@userly.io

FS: Thank you for providing us with this opportunity to interview you.
