Interview with Yangyang Liao at Thursday 19th of October 2023 FS: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer? YL: I am a classmate who graduated from the Industrial Design Department of Beijing Institute of Technology, and now I only work with Xiaomi. The reason why I want to be a designer is because design is a discipline that uses creativity to change the world. This thing is wonderful and an affirmation of idealism. FS: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio? YL: Xiaomi is a Chinese mobile phone manufacturing company that also has an ecological chain and other industrial chains. FS: What is "design" for you? YL: Change FS: What kinds of works do you like designing most? YL: Design works that explore the boundaries of humanity. FS: What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it? YL: Musk’s design for commercial rockets is a design that combines engineering aesthetics and creativity for the future world. FS: What was the first thing you designed for a company? YL: Xiaomi 13ultra photography kit. FS: What is your favorite material / platform / technology? YL: 3d printing FS: When do you feel the most creative? YL: Evening & early morning FS: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing? YL: Exploring human boundaries meets facts. FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when you design? YL: Empathy FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized? YL: passionate FS: What makes a design successful? YL: passion and ideals FS: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first? YL: What has changed in the design? Is it beautiful? Is it a physical or spiritual design? FS: From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment? YL: An important role in reimagining humanity’s future relationship with the environment. FS: How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design? YL: Intelligence, interaction, emotion, and future services are the direction of design, and the future of design is also the above four. FS: When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition? YL: No exhibition held FS: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations? YL: life and fantasy FS: How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design? YL: Simplicity and science fiction are my favorite styles. In commercial design, I pay more attention to practicality and user experience. FS: Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country? How can companies select a good designer? YL: Passion and the ability to imagine, complemented by professional design skills. FS: Can you talk a little about your design process? YL: Passion and the ability to imagine. FS: What are 5 of your favorite design items at home? YL: Barcelona chairs, butterfly chairs, moon chairs, Meng Fei style chairs, and Chinese dragon chairs. FS: Can you describe a day in your life? YL: Think, work, exercise, study, sleep FS: Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers? YL: Maintain your passion and idealism, and stay true to yourself. FS: From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer? YL: The pursuit of freedom at the spiritual level is an advantage, but at the spiritual level you have to bear the pressure of being independent. FS: What is your "golden rule" in design? YL: Passion and fantasy + professional engineering knowledge + superb expression skills FS: What skills are most important for a designer? YL: think FS: Which tools do you use during design? What is inside your toolbox? Such as software, application, hardware, books, sources of inspiration etc.?
