Interview with Hsiang Kai Yang at Saturday 1st of May 2021 FS: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer? HKY: In my high school, I studied Visual Design from a technical school until I changed to Urban and Landscape Design in college and then to Architecture and Interior in graduate school, and I always advocated hand-painted technology in my schooling days. FS: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio? HKY: Although the company has been in business for five years, as an operator of the company, we attach great importance to every design case. How to achieve harmony between users and nature is our most important belief. FS: What is "design" for you? HKY: Design is not art, but it also includes the connotation of art, which I refer to practical operation. To put it bluntly, design is a process of solving problems, but it covers beauty and function. FS: What kinds of works do you like designing most? HKY: Residence is the closest to everyone's life, and I quite like residence design. FS: What is your favorite material / platform / technology? HKY: I love natural materials such as wood and stone FS: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing? HKY: To achieve a balance between man and nature while meeting the needs of customers FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized? HKY: When the work is completed, we will be full of touch and sense of accomplishment FS: What makes a design successful? HKY: Understand human nature, A good design lies in being able to listen to the needs of users and propose solutions that are better than the needs. FS: From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment? HKY: Create better things and make people live in harmony with nature FS: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations? HKY: This part is a bit extreme, partly we need to get in touch with different people and things and experience different life styles, partly we need to calm down and listen to our own beliefs. FS: Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country? HKY: I live in Taiwan. Our culture must have an influence on our design, especially Zen. The blank space is a kind of poetic space. In Taiwan, customers like to direct designers to make some non-professional suggestions. This part is Where Taiwan's design environment needs to be worked harder. FS: What are your suggestions to companies for working with a designer? How can companies select a good designer? HKY: It is the wisest choice to have a positive attitude and passionate partner FS: What are 5 of your favorite design items at home? HKY: Chair,table,lamp,teapot and bookshelf FS: Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers? HKY: Don’t be afraid to try and experience different life experiences FS: From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer? HKY: The good influence is that as a designer, I know how to use space aesthetics better than the average person, while the bad influence is that I can't get used to things that are not beautiful. FS: What is your "golden rule" in design? HKY: Less is more FS: What skills are most important for a designer? HKY: Hand drawing is an important foundation for designer FS: Which tools do you use during design? What is inside your toolbox? Such as software, application, hardware, books, sources of inspiration etc.? HKY: Hand drawing, AutoCad 3Dmax,Occasionally read the master's work for inspiration FS: Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time? HKY: Make a schedule and execute it step by step FS: How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end? HKY: Not necessarily, it needs to be assessed on the merits of each case FS: What is the most frequently asked question to you, as a designer? HKY: What is the central idea of the design? Does it meet the needs of customers? FS: What was your most important job experience? HKY: Participated in the planning and design of large hotels and cooperated with experts in various professional fields FS: Who are some of your clients? HKY: All kinds of people have, for example Newlyweds, businessmen... FS: What type of design work do you enjoy the most and why? HKY: Residential design, this type is the most close to people's lives, you can experience various people's living habits and listen to different life stories FS: What are your future plans? What is next for you? HKY: Continue to participate in the competition to hone yourself and strive to improve the quality of the work FS: Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself?
