Interview with Amr Ibrahim Mousa at Sunday 15th of May 2022 FS: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer? AIM: Amr Ibrahim Mousa is an award-winning multidisciplinary designer, architect, and visual artist based in Milan, Italy. Amr received his double bachelor's degree in "Architecture Engineering" from Greenwich University, the UK, and Modern Science and Arts University, Egypt. and a master's degree in "Architecture and Urban Design" from Politecnico Di Milano. FS: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio? AIM: MOUSA studio is an award-winning multidisciplinary design studio specialized in creating innovative, iconic, and memorable designs of architecture, interiors, brand identity, and product design. Founded by Amr Ibrahim Mousa. FS: What is "design" for you? AIM: Everything. Everything is designed. From architecture to logos. and designers have a direct impact on society. FS: What kinds of works do you like designing most? AIM: I like being a design generalist, which has made me a more confident and adaptable designer. I don't mind working on any project. FS: What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it? AIM: It's difficult to pick one. FS: What was the first thing you designed for a company? AIM: Brand Identity. FS: What is your favorite material / platform / technology? AIM: I like 3D-Printing FS: When do you feel the most creative? AIM: With a challenging situation of solving a design problem. FS: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing? AIM: To create the most suitable design solution with the highest consideration of its function and aesthetic values to give it the possibility of becoming timeless. FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when you design? AIM: Passion. FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized? AIM: I can't even describe how amazing that feels. FS: What makes a design successful? AIM: The highest consideration of its function and aesthetic values gives it the possibility of becoming timeless. FS: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first? AIM: Function + Form FS: From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment? AIM: Everything. Everything is designed. From architecture to logos. and designers have a direct impact on society. FS: How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design? AIM: Technology. FS: When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition? AIM: Dubai Expo. Last November. Next should be in Italy. FS: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations? AIM: Everything. FS: How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design? AIM: I don't have one vision or one style. There’s no optimum solution in design but to reach excellence you have to come very flexible. FS: Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country? AIM: Milan, but I'm from Egypt. I believe yes. Being an Egyptian helped me a lot. FS: How do you work with companies? AIM: On different scales and projects. FS: What are your suggestions to companies for working with a designer? How can companies select a good designer? AIM: Portfolios say a lot. FS: Can you talk a little about your design process? AIM: I don't have one process, but it always starts with reading and understanding. FS: What are 5 of your favorite design items at home? AIM: My desk, lighting, sofa, bookshelf, and an A' design award trophy. FS: Can you describe a day in your life? AIM: I wake up at 6 am. and design until I sleep hahaha FS: Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers? AIM: One thing at a time. FS: From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer? AIM: Constant learning is one of the positives and subjectivity is one of the negatives. FS: What is your "golden rule" in design? AIM: The desire to create something with lasting value is what I'm trying to do in every design project. FS: What skills are most important for a designer? AIM: Design is basically problem-solving. FS: Which tools do you use during design? What is inside your toolbox? Such as software, application, hardware, books, sources of inspiration etc.? AIM: I use all kinds of software as long as it helps me create my idea. FS: Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time? AIM: I start by doing what's necessary, then what's possible. FS: How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end? AIM: It differs. FS: What is the most frequently asked question to you, as a designer? AIM: How to stay focused? FS: What was your most important job experience? AIM: It was a project on Egyptian banknotes. FS: Who are some of your clients? AIM: Architecture firms, advertising agencies, and individual professionals. FS: What type of design work do you enjoy the most and why? AIM: The brainstorming. Possibilities are always endless. FS: What are your future plans? What is next for you? AIM: I like being a design generalist, which has made me a more confident and adaptable designer. I don't mind working on any project. FS: Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself? AIM: Both ways.
