Interview with Zhejiang Sci-Tech University at Thursday 22nd of April 2021 FS: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer? ZSU: Chinese painting is a well-known art, but Chinese design is not. Many years ago, after I came into contact with industrial design in high school, I decided to abandon art and turn to design FS: What is "design" for you? ZSU: Design is one of the ways to reorganize all kinds of information. Designers express their understanding of objects, spaces, and people by organizing information. This process is not about expressing extreme artistic self or pursuing the ultimate in technology, but integrating more. The value proposition is then expressed as a process of user thinking. FS: What is your favorite material / platform / technology? ZSU: There is no favorite, as long as it is beneficial to the design, I will like it FS: When do you feel the most creative? ZSU: When not working, such as walking on the street or climbing a mountain FS: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing? ZSU: Human behavior. FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when you design? ZSU: Passion FS: What makes a design successful? ZSU: Too many factors. There are both designer’s creativity and technological progress FS: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first? ZSU: Innovation.Does this design have some unique ideas of the designer? FS: When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition? ZSU: We have been exhibiting in Shenzhen for 2 years, and the next exhibition should be in Shenzhen FS: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations? ZSU: I like to look at a lot of things, not just professional fields. In the past few years, my design inspiration has come more from the small details in the living environment, the insight into small things, and the state of human behavior. FS: Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country? ZSU: I am in Hangzhou, a typical humanistic city in China, with a long history and beautiful scenery. In the past few years, I have practiced the combination of traditional cultural genes and modern lifestyles in a large number of projects. Through analyzing the local humanities, nature, political and social environment, In the regional understanding and application, a better solution was found. FS: How do you work with companies? ZSU: Design service or brand strategy FS: Can you describe a day in your life? ZSU: A day in life child dog employee family FS: Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers? ZSU: In me the tiger sniffs the rose FS: From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer? ZSU: Positive: Do well and have a high level of cognition Negative: easy to fall into the trap of false life packaging, excessive pursuit of positioning, and loss of thinking ability FS: What skills are most important for a designer? ZSU: Aesthetics observation and thinking FS: Which tools do you use during design? What is inside your toolbox? Such as software, application, hardware, books, sources of inspiration etc.? ZSU: Hand Painted.Painting is not whether the plan at this stage is good or not, but more important is the process of growth and accumulation.Hand drawing is also the most convenient. FS: Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time? ZSU: Make good use of time fragments, don’t try to test your mind, study at any time, rest at any time, work at any time, and grasp the fleeting inspiration. FS: What is the most frequently asked question to you, as a designer? ZSU: why is it like this FS: What was your most important job experience? ZSU: Enterprise. I have been in the enterprise for 7 years. I know the state of Chinese enterprises so much that I can easily get the recognition of the enterprise when I do design communication problems with different enterprises, because I will look at the problem from the other side’s point of view. , This is necessary. FS: Who are some of your clients? ZSU: Our main customers are enterprises, mainly furniture products, and some end consumers FS: Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself?
