Interview with Chunmao Wu and Tian Gao at Sunday 16th of May 2021 FS: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer? CWATG: We are from positive experience design lab in Donghua University. We believe that design can improve our well-being. FS: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio? CWATG: www.wudesign.net FS: What is "design" for you? CWATG: I want to introduce my definition of positive design. Positive Design is a possibility-driven activity with positive value creation, which provides pleasure and meaningful interactive experiences for individuals and communities via innovative products, services, and systems, so as to improve human-wellbeing, community-flourishing, and contribute to glorious future. FS: What kinds of works do you like designing most? CWATG: up to my clients. FS: What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it? CWATG: only focus on how to improve human's well-being and flourishing. FS: What was the first thing you designed for a company? CWATG: salary FS: What is your favorite material / platform / technology? CWATG: IoT, Artificial Intelligent FS: When do you feel the most creative? CWATG: When communicating with others. FS: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing? CWATG: Aesthetic, function, usability, creativity, sustainability etc. FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when you design? CWATG: calm. FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized? CWATG: Happy. FS: What makes a design successful? CWATG: Balance all of the factors in design. FS: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first? CWATG: Aesthetic, function, usability, creativity, sustainability etc. FS: From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment? CWATG: sustainability is an standard of design. FS: How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design? CWATG: Technology is an important factor for the future of design. FS: When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition? CWATG: My last exhibition held on April in Shanghai, the next exhibition will be in MOOD museum of Design on June. FS: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations? CWATG: My inspiration is based on the scientific analysis. FS: How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design? CWATG: simple and emotional are keywords in my design works. I am also a researcher, and contribute lots of papers in positive design field, for example, possibility driven design method, wellbeing design approach, etc. FS: Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country? CWATG: I live in Shanghai. Chinese culture influence me a lot in my design progress. FS: How do you work with companies? CWATG: face to face meeting 2hours 1 week. FS: What are your suggestions to companies for working with a designer? How can companies select a good designer? CWATG: Pay on time. FS: Can you talk a little about your design process? CWATG: Discover, Diagnose, Define, Design, Develop, Deploy, Deliver, Display FS: What are 5 of your favorite design items at home? CWATG: Xiaomi smart home. FS: Can you describe a day in your life? CWATG: Design and communicate from 8:30 AM to 18:00 PM FS: Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers? CWATG: Experience life is the first for a designer. FS: From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer? CWATG: Designer always try to make something better, but do not forget the users's real need motivation. FS: What is your "golden rule" in design? CWATG: Strength of Pure FS: What skills are most important for a designer? CWATG: design thinking FS: Which tools do you use during design? What is inside your toolbox? Such as software, application, hardware, books, sources of inspiration etc.? CWATG: Rhino, Solidworks, Key shot, Grasshopper etc. FS: Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time? CWATG: by some tools, such as Task card, App. FS: How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end? CWATG: depends on the project. FS: What is the most frequently asked question to you, as a designer? CWATG: What is the value of your design? FS: What was your most important job experience? CWATG: cooperated with Braun. FS: Who are some of your clients? CWATG: Kessebohmer, Braun, Chenguang, Zhejiang Huimei etc. FS: What type of design work do you enjoy the most and why? CWATG: Emotional Product. All the design needs to stimulate the user's emotion. FS: What are your future plans? What is next for you? CWATG: cooperate with engineers to make all of our design to be products. FS: Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself? CWATG: I am working at positive experience design lab. There are nearly 10 team members in our lab. FS: Do you have any works-in-progress being designed that you would like to talk about? CWATG: We are now designing some furnitures for university students. FS: How can people contact you?
