Interview with Hee soo Son at Thursday 19th of December 2019
Hee soo Son
FS: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
HSS: In fact, when I was young, my dream was to be an inventor. But as I grew older, I realized that what I wanted was more in touch with the design, and I became more interested in visual design, so I think I've come so far.

FS: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
HSS: I am still a student so I do not belong to any company or studio.

FS: What is "design" for you?
HSS: an element that can be added to everything and made more beautiful and meaningful.

FS: What kinds of works do you like designing most?
HSS: Recently, I feel most interesting and my favorite design is brand design.

FS: What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?
HSS: My favorite design is nothing else. Generally, I like a 'reasonable' design that fits the situation and meaning and fits the target.

FS: What was the first thing you designed for a company?
HSS: I remember making the logo of the logistics company called 'Fresh Solutions' was the first attempt to design for the company.

FS: What is your favorite material / platform / technology?
HSS: I prefer online media as I work on design.

FS: When do you feel the most creative?
HSS: Creative moments can be divided into the first moment when you suddenly see something and the second time when all the research is done and you find a logical moment where you find a valid design.

FS: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?
HSS: It seems important not only is aesthetic, but also whether the process to which this design comes out is reasonable.

FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?
HSS: I think it's similar to solving a quiz.

FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized?
HSS: I haven't had much experience yet, so I think I've been puzzled.

FS: What makes a design successful?
HSS: a thorough pre-survey and understanding of the situation

FS: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?
HSS: Whether the design matches the background and the output of the design

FS: From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?
HSS: To make it easy for people to read even if it is a manual It reminds me of the saying 'consideration and Empathy'

FS: How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?
HSS: I think there will be more design that combines technology.

FS: When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition?
HSS: Because I am still a student, the project exhibition that I did at school was the last exhibition. The next exhibition is not yet ready.

FS: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?
HSS: I don't think there's a definite source of inspiration.

FS: How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?
HSS: Reasonably organized design. I always care about the validity of the design.

FS: Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?
HSS: I live in South Korea. I think I have come to learn the beauty of moderation and try to reflect it in design from the simple yet diverse lifestyle and architectural style of South Korea.

FS: How do you work with companies?
HSS: We find a way to draw from what they ask and the data survey.

FS: What are your suggestions to companies for working with a designer? How can companies select a good designer?
HSS: I think it would be better to pick someone who understands what the company is asking for and what direction the company is pursuing.

FS: Can you talk a little about your design process?
HSS: Based on an overall survey of the goals to be designed, I choose factors to design and solve them in a story.

FS: Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers?
HSS: Instead of pursuing aesthetic, think about the goal of design and try to solve the inconvenience or design it so that it can lead in a better

FS: From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer?
HSS: The good thing is that design can change the world to be beautiful or useful, and the bad thing is that you have to be sensitive and think a lot more because you have to be able to capture things that other people overlook.

FS: What is your "golden rule" in design?
HSS: To judge rationally and design emotionally

FS: What skills are most important for a designer?
HSS: deductive reasoning

FS: Which tools do you use during design? What is inside your toolbox? Such as software, application, hardware, books, sources of inspiration etc.?
HSS: I mostly use adobe programs

FS: Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time?
HSS: It is not a desirable method, but I spend the next day taking a good rest after staying up all night when I concentrate on my work.

FS: How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end?
HSS: vary from time to time

FS: What is the most frequently asked question to you, as a designer?
HSS: I think I hear a lot of questions about what is the most beautiful design and what is the most wrong design.

FS: What was your most important job experience?
HSS: Recently, I think it was the most important that I worked as an intern in the design department of a company for six months.

FS: Who are some of your clients?
HSS: vary from time to time

FS: What type of design work do you enjoy the most and why?
HSS: Sometimes motion graphics, sometimes brand design feels fun.

FS: What are your future plans? What is next for you?
HSS: Now that I am still a student, I want to study both foreign languages and design in order to increase my chances for the future.

FS: Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself?
HSS: I both does. because It has the advantage of working as a team and only possible when working as a person.

FS: How can people contact you?
HSS: I think e-mail is the most convenient way. (heesoo100@naver.com)
