Interview with Jervis Chua at Sunday 16th of May 2021 FS: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer? JC: Growing up, I've always felt that the ability to create something was very cool. So when I discovered Industrial Design I knew immediately that this would be what I wanted to take up in college. It seemed fun and less intimidating than an engineering degree. FS: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio? JC: My studio is called Build Republic. I felt that a long term investment in cultivating a good design culture within SME's and start ups was lacking. So I founded this studio with a name that encourages companies to invest long term in building excellent products, building cult brands and building a strong design culture within their companies. FS: What is "design" for you? JC: innovation, beauty and delight FS: What kinds of works do you like designing most? JC: Working so many years in the industry made me realize that it's really the quality of the team, collaborators and client that makes design most enjoyable to me. The type of product does not matter too much, but rather working with a high degree of confidence that the design will be successful is what's important. FS: When do you feel the most creative? JC: When there is a high degree of conviction with the design brief. FS: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing? JC: Apart from usefulness and usability, I focus a lot on ensuring that a product has an identity that is in-line with the brand aesthetics and philosophy. It is how brands engage and build relationship with customers. FS: What makes a design successful? JC: A design is successful when it pushes innovation and society forward or brings profit to the company. FS: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first? JC: I always look for clever ways of utilizing manufacturing capabilities and materials. FS: How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design? JC: My design style is whatever is right for the brand and its customers. FS: What are your suggestions to companies for working with a designer? How can companies select a good designer? JC: Select a designer with a high degree of interest towards your industry. This is how you can trust that the designer will do the work to learn and design something that is right for your customers and not for the designer. FS: What type of design work do you enjoy the most and why? JC: Design work for brands with small but talented team is most enjoyable because it's very efficient and often most effective in ensuring innovation. FS: How can people contact you? JC: Search for buildrepublic online and on major social media
