Interview with Ling Dai at Sunday 5th of May 2019 FS: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer? LD: Graduated from China University of Geosciences,Specialty is jewelry design,Get a master degree.Enjoy the process of creation and design.In the process of learning, I gradually realized that I wanted to be a designer. FS: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio? LD: I have my own independent design studio, named after myself. It was founded in 2015 and is located in Guangzhou, China. FS: What is "design" for you? LD: Design enables me to really understand my inner thoughts and what I really like and love. FS: What kinds of works do you like designing most? LD: Design enables me to really understand my inner thoughts and what I really like and love. FS: What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it? LD: A creative advertisement from Coca-Cola Company replaces the finished plastic bottle with a different function bottle mouth. It can turn the bottle into a toy water gun, a watering vase, a shower head and other functional daily necessities. FS: What was the first thing you designed for a company? LD: Renovation Design and Modification of an Old Jade Hanging Plate. FS: What is your favorite material / platform / technology? LD: Some memorable materials/Handmade. FS: When do you feel the most creative? LD: After watching a movie, listening to a song and a story. FS: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing? LD: User's Feelings. FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when you design? LD: best to calmly analyze the elements of design. FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized? LD: Happiness and comfort, and reflection at the same time. FS: What makes a design successful? LD: Get good market feedback. FS: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first? LD: Satisfy myself first. FS: From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment? LD: Design and guide a better lifestyle. FS: How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design? LD: Everyone can design. Everyone has a unique design method. FS: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations? LD: Inspiration comes to life. FS: How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design? LD: Individual Emotion Oriented. FS: Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country? LD: Guangzhou, China. The culture of a country must influence the cultural value and aesthetics of a designer.Chinese culture has a long history, there are many can be excavated. FS: How do you work with companies? LD: Customers communicate directly with designers and cooperate in a project way. FS: What are your suggestions to companies for working with a designer? How can companies select a good designer? LD: Every designer has his own unique design style and personality charm. The company needs to choose designers who can appreciate each other and communicate with each other so that they can grow together while solving problems. FS: Can you talk a little about your design process? LD: First, understand customer needs in detail, and then combine their own creativity and design, so that works have their own unique charm, presented in a way that customers can understand, and participate in it together. FS: Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers? LD: Do what you really love. FS: From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer? LD: The positive is to accept new things with an inclusive mind, while the negative is to learn to enjoy loneliness. FS: What is your "golden rule" in design? LD: Release one's nature. FS: What skills are most important for a designer? LD: Sensibility, expressiveness,communication skills, and real-time understanding of new materials and processes. FS: Which tools do you use during design? What is inside your toolbox? Such as software, application, hardware, books, sources of inspiration etc.? LD: Make material specimens and hand-painted tools. FS: How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end? LD: Time is uncertain. Sometimes it takes months and sometimes hours to complete. FS: What was your most important job experience? LD: As a lecturer of jewelry design major, while giving lectures, reflect on their own design ideas. FS: Who are some of your clients? LD: Provide design services for individuals and jewelry companies. FS: Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself?
