Interview with Miko Lim at Thursday 14th of March 2024

FS: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
ML: I've always loved drawing since I was a child, often using the margins of newspapers as my canvas and winning awards in various painting competitions. After graduating from high school and working for a year, I found myself still longing for art and creativity, so I decided to further my education and successfully became a designer.

FS: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
ML: Miko Creative is a Small Office Home Office (SOHO) established since 2010. Our company specializes in brand design and large-scale printing, operating as a dedicated studio for brand design solutions.

FS: What is "design" for you?
ML: Conception and planning for problem solving and incorporating an element of surprise into the design. Call out the little idea from each people.

FS: What kinds of works do you like designing most?
ML: Work that allows me to have ample space for creativity.

FS: What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?
ML: Corporate Identity, because I can incorporate a hidden message or story or meaning behind the design.

FS: What was the first thing you designed for a company?
ML: First thing i designed for a company is corporate identity.

FS: What is your favorite material / platform / technology?
ML: Adobe Illustrator

FS: When do you feel the most creative?
ML: When I am in positive mind.

FS: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?
ML: Practicality.

FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?
ML: I feel excited and happy all the time because I appreciate every opportunities given by my client.

FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized?
ML: Excited, Satisfaction, and Grateful!

FS: What makes a design successful?
ML: Inspiration and matching.

FS: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?
ML: Practicality.

FS: From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?
ML: Bring positive educational messages and a sense of beauty.

FS: How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?
ML: Influence people from feeling that they don't need to be sure. Design is to create the future.

FS: When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition?
ML: 2019, A' Design Award, Como Italy.

FS: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?
ML: Positive Mind, Relaxing Environment, and the research from other designers.

FS: How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?
ML: Freestyle with practicality and meaning. Appreciate every little things and details in life and things around us, so as to stay creatively. & research, diligently.

FS: Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?
ML: Malaysia. Malaysia cultural heritage does not really affects for my designs. Although to a certain extend, it does shape the way i work and play, my views and my values and these does count to my ultimate design. But I do tend to read and reference to the outside world more through internet or traveling so I don’t really feel the cultural heritage of Malaysia affects my design to a certain extend. Malaysia government is not really focus and support designing line.

FS: How do you work with companies?
ML: Communicate, treat yourself as a client, and make appropriate positioning.

FS: What are your suggestions to companies for working with a designer? How can companies select a good designer?
ML: Give more time and respect, because good communication will be achieved good results. Companies select a good designer can refer her artwork and review from designer client.

FS: Can you talk a little about your design process?
ML: Research, planning, trying, create.

FS: What are 5 of your favorite design items at home?
ML: Plant platter, window painting, food platter, wall design and car decoration.

FS: Can you describe a day in your life?
ML: Interesting and freedom.

FS: Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers?
ML: Accept criticize with an open heart, passionate, and never stop learning.

FS: From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer?
ML: Positive side is when you receive recognition and appreciation on your work.Negative side is very stressful and might lead into depression if you can not find your way out of it.

FS: What is your "golden rule" in design?
ML: To have at least a same point of view between customer and myself when comes to design.

FS: What skills are most important for a designer?
ML: Most of the designers have skills, but I think what matters the most is the mindset of a designer.

FS: Which tools do you use during design? What is inside your toolbox? Such as software, application, hardware, books, sources of inspiration etc.?
ML: Adobe Illustrator, Pen Tool.

FS: Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time?
ML: Self Discipline

FS: How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end?
ML: Depends on what job and customer's request.

FS: What is the most frequently asked question to you, as a designer?
ML: How and where did those ideas came from.

FS: What was your most important job experience?
ML: Rebrand.

FS: Who are some of your clients?
ML: Cafe Owners, Hotel Owners, Museum, Jewelry Boutiques and etc.

FS: What type of design work do you enjoy the most and why?
ML: Visual Identity because is the key of a company image.

FS: What are your future plans? What is next for you?
ML: To pursue my career in oversea. Create more shocking art.

FS: Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself?
ML: I design alone, but teamwork when doing project.

FS: How can people contact you?
ML: Via social media, like whatsapp, wechat, email or line.
