Interview with Mateus Morgan at Thursday 28th of October 2021 FS: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer? MM: I graduated in graphic design and since 2006 i worked as art director in design agencies in my city. Time ago i started to work as a freelancer doing jobs for great Brazilian clients. FS: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio? MM: Morgan Studio is situated in Franca, SP here in Brazil. The studio is focused in 3d and product visualization. FS: What is "design" for you? MM: Is a form to translate sensation trough image. FS: What kinds of works do you like designing most? MM: Key visual for product and packaging also. FS: What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it? MM: It's Fly Boot key art. The first i had nominated in A'Design Awards and was a very pleasant project to do. FS: What was the first thing you designed for a company? MM: Was a product design for a shoe industry. FS: What is your favorite material / platform / technology? MM: 3d softwares overall like 3ds Max and Zbrush. FS: When do you feel the most creative? MM: At night in my bed just before sleeping. FS: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing? MM: The sensory and composition aspects. FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when you design? MM: A little anxiety at first, then the process becomes satisfying as it goes right FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized? MM: Relief (because sometimes the process is very exhausting) and pride. But pride begins to disappear as I begin to think about what I might have done differently. FS: What makes a design successful? MM: When the sensory message is achieved. FS: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first? MM: The feeling that design was able to pass at the end and the composition or diagramation aspects. FS: From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment? MM: The designer is a keeper of a message the company want to show for your public. A good designer can translate this message trough the art. FS: How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design? MM: I think the VR and 3d printing are the future of design. FS: When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition? MM: I had some exposure in university time, but it was a long time ago. If it goes well, my next will be in Milan. FS: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations? MM: In general classic paintings, that always have great composition ang lighting technics. FS: How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design? MM: As a generalist i always have to change my style. But i always think about the sensation the art brings at first. FS: Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country? MM: I live in Brazil, a strong cultural country. But i don't stuck with just brazilian culture to do my arts, the design nowadays started to be more global and multicultural. FS: How do you work with companies? MM: I work by my design studio. FS: What are your suggestions to companies for working with a designer? How can companies select a good designer? MM: A good designer can be versatile and able to break design rules whenever necessary. FS: Can you talk a little about your design process? MM: My process start with reference research and then i start some composition tests. FS: What are 5 of your favorite design items at home? MM: Ironically i don't have appealing design items at home. FS: Can you describe a day in your life? MM: I start usually at 8am and finish at 18h pm. But as a studio owner i have some flexibility, so it's not a routine. FS: Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers? MM: Always use the reference image and learn the basics until you are experienced. FS: From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer? MM: A good designer can be recognized such an artist and have some benefits with this. But in general is very hard to be well paid and this work can be a lot time consuming. FS: What is your "golden rule" in design? MM: It's the composition. Arts with poor composition are always poor appealing. FS: What skills are most important for a designer? MM: Lighting, color, composition and diagramation skills. FS: Which tools do you use during design? What is inside your toolbox? Such as software, application, hardware, books, sources of inspiration etc.? MM: 3d softwares overall. I'm not a assidual book reader so everything i learn is online. FS: Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time? MM: I try to always wake up at 8am and try to focus at work time, avoiding distractions. FS: How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end? MM: A good design takes about 2 or 3 weeks. FS: What is the most frequently asked question to you, as a designer? MM: Where i learned my skills and the softwares i use. FS: What was your most important job experience? MM: Was the Fly Boot key visual. FS: Who are some of your clients? MM: Vivo, Amanco, Editora Abril (4Rodas, Superinteressante and Mundo Estranho magazines), Vedacit. FS: What type of design work do you enjoy the most and why? MM: I love packaging design. I consider that is one of more important form of design. FS: What are your future plans? What is next for you? MM: Is to participate some competitions and show my work worldwide. FS: Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself? MM: I worked with a team with 2 members, but nowadays is just me and some partners. Sometimes we do the work together and sometimes not. FS: Do you have any works-in-progress being designed that you would like to talk about? MM: For now i am working in a 3d motion but the job started right now and there's not too much to talk yet. FS: How can people contact you?
