FS: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
TP: Sono diplomato al Liceo Artistico Statale di Bari, ho lavorato in agenzia pubblicitaria ed ho collaborato e collaboro ancora con tanti architetti per i quali, per molti anni ho realizzato e realizzo ancora plastici architettonici. Ho sempre desiderato da bambino di fare l’architetto e non ci sono riuscito per varie vicissitudini della vita, ma sono sempre stato nel settore progettuale architettonico, grafico e meccanico…
FS: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
TP: Collaboro con la DILLO Acrylic Design per la quale progetto e realizzo la maggior parte dei complementi d’arredo in plexiglas.
FS: What is "design" for you?
TP: E’ la materializzazione dei propri pensieri.
FS: What kinds of works do you like designing most?
TP: Non ho preferenze, ma adoro particolarmente i progetti dove non ci sia da risolvere solo il problema estetico, ma soprattutto l’aspetto costruttivo ed i particolari.
FS: What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?
TP: MIA Lamp senza ombra di dubbio, è un concentrato di conoscenza ed esperienza nella progettazione e lavorazione del plexiglass.
FS: What was the first thing you designed for a company?
TP: un piede d’albero per una barca a vela.
FS: What is your favorite material / platform / technology?
TP: Il plexiglass e il taglio laser
FS: When do you feel the most creative?
TP: Quando sono sereno
FS: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?
TP: Le proporzioni, l’aspetto costruttivo. la funzionalità, la fruibilità e l’estetica vanno sempre insieme, si parte dalla necessità dell’oggetto da progettare e si va avanti…
FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?
TP: Grandi emozioni quando dalla matita, vengono fuori le prime bozze dell’idea.
FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized?
TP: Emozioni forti soprattutto dopo che ho realizzato il primo prototipo.
FS: What makes a design successful?
TP: La maggior parte delle volte, l’aspetto estetico.
FS: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?
TP: L’utilità, l’estetica, la funzionalità e la completezza dell’oggetto.
FS: From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?
TP: Curare nei dettagli tutti gli aspetti, in particolare l’ecosostenibilità.
FS: How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?
TP: Si sta evolvendo sempre più nell’utilità e nell’ecosostenibilià con materiali innovativi e alternativi.
FS: When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition?
TP: Non ho fatto mostre, ho alcuni pezzi realizzati, in postazione fissa in alcuni musei.
FS: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?
TP: Non ci sono parametri precisi, l’ispirazione viene da una necessità.
FS: How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?
TP: E’ uno stile semplice, pulito ma ricercato.
FS: Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?
TP: Vivo in Italia e più precisamente a Bari, in Puglia. Terra ricchissima di cultura, storia e storia dell’arte ed è sempre fonte di ispirazione.
FS: How do you work with companies?
TP: in perfetta sintonia con tutti con la massima umiltà.
FS: What are your suggestions to companies for working with a designer? How can companies select a good designer?
TP: Trovare un designer versatile, umile e desideroso di crescere con una o più aziende.
FS: Can you talk a little about your design process?
TP: Proposta progettuale messa su carta a matita con indicazioni dimensionali approssimative, indicazioni materiche e possibilmente alcuni schizzi in prospettiva o assonometria. Successivamente, disegno al CAD 3D con verifica dimensionale e cromatica. Realizzazione prototipo con verifica progettuale e funzionale.
FS: What are 5 of your favorite design items at home?
TP: MIA Lamp, un portariviste, un portatovaglioli buffet, un cachepot e un caricabatterie per smartphone con funzione anche di luce d’atmosfera.
FS: Can you describe a day in your life?
TP: Giornata comune con impegni di lavoro.
FS: Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers?
TP: Siate colti e umili, mettete l’anima e il cuore in tutto ciò che fate e credeteci sempre.
FS: From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer?
TP: Non credo ci siano aspetti negativi
FS: What is your "golden rule" in design?
TP: Crederci sempre
FS: What skills are most important for a designer?
TP: La pratica e la perfetta conoscenza dei materiali.
FS: Which tools do you use during design? What is inside your toolbox? Such as software, application, hardware, books, sources of inspiration etc.?
TP: Nella mia cassetta degli attrezzi ci sono: un cutter, un blocco di carta, una matita, un pennarello indelebile, un rotolo di scotch, un computer portatile e Rhinoceros.
FS: Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time?
TP: Il giorno è di 24 ore e non per la creatività, non ci sono orari.
FS: How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end?
TP: Dipende dal progetto, dall’oggetto e dalla complessità della progettazione… Mediamente da 3 a 6 mesi.
FS: What is the most frequently asked question to you, as a designer?
TP: Quanto costa??
FS: What was your most important job experience?
TP: La collaborazione con un Architetto di fama inrternazionale
FS: Who are some of your clients?
TP: Studio di architettura Claudio Modola, Impresa Garibadi Fragasso srl, Studio di progettazione Navale Ing. Samarelli, Museo MARTA Taranto, Museo Archeologico METAPONTO (TA), Studio di architettura LCA arch. Luca COMPRI.
FS: What type of design work do you enjoy the most and why?
TP: Non ho preferenze, metto la massima attenzione in qualsiasi progetto.
FS: What are your future plans? What is next for you?
TP: Ho progetti personali interessanti.
FS: Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself?
TP: La maggior parte dei progetti, la sviluppo da solo.
FS: Do you have any works-in-progress being designed that you would like to talk about?
TP: Sto progettando Bijoux in plexiglass molto particolari e diversi dagli altri.
