TBO: The Product Design Center applies for new patents for its new product development projects and expands existing markets with its different system designs while also creating new markets. Our aim with new product development projects, which provide sustainable added value to our customers as well as our company, is to expand the market with innovative product designs. Our design team members are certified and remain up to date with regular training they receive including that from American Glass Research, one of the world's leading glass research institutions. Sisecam Design center offers actual bottles glass thickness and impact resistance assessments at critical points and will consult you on optimal packaging weight to enhance end-user usability, reduce wastage or save on shipping costs. FS: What is "design" for you? TBO: For me , design is "catching the customer's dream". Lucky to me, me and my team is very successful to manage this dream-catching process. FS: What kinds of works do you like designing most? TBO: Mostly, we like to achieve "the newest idea" not only in the related packaging sectors but also within their system. We like to show our talent to our clients and their consumers. FS: What is your favorite material / platform / technology? TBO: My favourtie material is glass and factories of glass packaging are my kindergardens. All kind of innovative technology is my favourite, cause they can support eachother in several ways. To find those ways are the fun part. FS: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing? TBO: Simplicity is my main rock. Production and Eco-friendly design are my indispensables. Nevertheless, the design should create a benefit for both client's and my company. FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when you design? TBO: I feel the joy of creating, proud for realizing my idea and satisfuction of doing my job FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized? TBO: I feel the joy of achieving, proud for my team's and mine success and satisfuction of contrubuting my company. FS: What makes a design successful? TBO: If a design is realized and our client is pleased with it, it is enough for declare it as a successful design. FS: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first? TBO: There is no good or bad design for what I believe. There could be only sutibale design for right aim. A suitable design must be producable and catches the general needs of the related project. If it is away to acheive these, it is not a suitable design. FS: From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment? TBO: Designers must be aware of what materials and how much of them they are planning to use for their design. To satisfy their ego must not the first thing for a designer but to aim the greater good of people should. FS: How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design? TBO: Not very far away, with the development of endustry 4.0 and AI technologies, even new ideas could be created by computer based evolution. So, as designers, we must be aware of managing this evolving for the sake of humanity. Till this reality, by the effect of 3d printer technologies with tones of materials and evolving of nanotechnology, I believe, a very bright future is upon us. FS: Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country? TBO: I live in one of the beautiful centers of istanbul at Anatolia side; Kozyatagi. Very close to the E5 high way to the Europe and Anatolia connections. Also close to the seaside and social neighbourhood. FS: How do you work with companies? TBO: We generally contact with companies via our sales department. We try to understand their needs over meetings and over our design briefs. Also, we specially create projects for some of our key clients and it will spread to others as well. Occasionally, we create our projects for developing a new market of which generates itself within a couple years. FS: What are your suggestions to companies for working with a designer? How can companies select a good designer? TBO: A good designer reflects their abilities through the company over their designs. They must understand the main goals of the company and use their abilities wisely. On the other hand, a company should be open to new ideas and support the designer first by trusting them. FS: Can you talk a little about your design process? TBO: We have several initiations but the rest of the process is similar: meet&merge Client&Project, Investigate the Market, Create Draft Ideas & Select in between, 3D create your ideas suitably for the production & elect in between (if necessary), create rendered presentation and finally present it to the Client. FS: Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers? TBO: Be creative! To do so, invest to yourself! The more you see&read the better you evolve… FS: From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer? TBO: Positives: It’s cool :) To see your idea become real is priceless! It has a wide range where you can develop your creativity. Negatives: People always mix design engineers with product designers :) You must always be ready to be creative! If you work as an inhouse designer, you must be becareful about your topics outside your company. FS: What skills are most important for a designer? TBO: Persistant, hardworker, open-minded, positive, detail-hunter, creative, compatable, lucky, respectful. FS: Which tools do you use during design? What is inside your toolbox? TBO: We had an advanced Product Cycle Managment software and we generally use this system. Even tough, the design part of the Project has an unknown time period due to approval from client’s perspective, in most of the projects we calculate this period about 2 weeks tops. According to client’s urgent needs, all other periods get into an order afterwards. The creation process is the important part of designing and as a team, we always give our focus to perform good creations. FS: How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end? TBO: It depends. It changes from one day to 2 weeks! FS: Who are some of your clients?
