Interview with Andrea Sosinski at Friday 27th of April 2018 FS: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer? AS: Since I can remember I loved to draw and do handicraft. I always wanted to have a creative job. That's why it was nearly clear that I went to study at the renowned Burg Giebichenstein university of art and design in Halle (Saale), that is in Germany. I studied ceramic and glass design, focussed on porcelain and also graphic design. FS: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio? AS: My company NIMTSCHKE DESIGN got its name from my maiden name Andrea Nimtschke, before I married. NIMTSCHKE is sorbian and translated it means "german". I do all kind of design: graphic design, corporate design, illustrations, product design, book design, room design and also photography. FS: What is "design" for you? AS: Design is for me the combination of a great look and best function. It should be surprising, usefull and has to make sense. It doesn't have to be "loud". Good design is timeless and can also convince at a second look. FS: What kinds of works do you like designing most? AS: I like doing Corporate Design and create products out of porcelain FS: What was the first thing you designed for a company? AS: Redesign of a logo. I started with improving and enhancing things that did not look good before. FS: What is your favorite material / platform / technology? AS: My favorite material is porcelain. But also lether and fabrics because I like sewing as well. And I like the Adobe Suite for graphic design. I do a lot of creative stuff every day with it. FS: When do you feel the most creative? AS: When I go to bed. If I need to find a solution for a problem I just have to sleep one night and get the answer in the morning. FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when you design? AS: I feel happy and excited. Can't wait to see my ideas getting alive. FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized? AS: I am proud, of course. FS: What makes a design successful? AS: In my eyes it is not all about shape. The function is important as well. A good looking product that doesn't work will not survive. Successful design is like a good friend you always want to be surrounded by. FS: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first? AS: First it has to convince my eyes with its shape and second my hands or body with its function. FS: How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design? AS: Clear and reduced to the essentials. Surprising, functional, with wit and a wink. FS: Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country? AS: I live in Germany and think it affects my design a lot. Germans are mostly perfect in what they do. They are reliable, functional, tidy and always in time. In fact very rational but with deep hidden emotions. I love to evoke them with my designs. They should produce happiness. FS: How do you work with companies? AS: I create products that they produce on license. But most of the time I do graphic design and marketing for companies and start-ups. I am working as a freelancer. FS: Which tools do you use during design? What is inside your toolbox? Such as software, application, hardware, books, sources of inspiration etc.? AS: The Adobe Suite: Photoshop, Indesign and Illustrator. For products out of porcelain I still use pencil and paper and make often a plaster prototype. FS: Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself? AS: I develop my designs by myself. FS: How can people contact you? AS: www.nimtschke.de or www.facebook.com/pg/Nimtschke-Design-Andrea-Sosinski-156281574429991/posts/
