Interview with Banafsheh Hemmati Far at Tuesday 2nd of May 2017 FS: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio? BHF: I have a private jewelry gallery and it's named after myself, banafsheh. Which I offer limited edition and also custom designs. I Exhibit my works at an art gallery first and then in my own one. FS: What is "design" for you? BHF: Design could have different meanings in different branches, like problem solving and ... but in general putting together aesthetics and function matters a lot to me which I believe it's combined with notion and concept in contemporary art which ultimately made the borders of it with fine art or visual art fade away. FS: What kinds of works do you like designing most? BHF: Design is my passion and I like all kinds of it like jewelry, furniture,... FS: What was the first thing you designed for a company? BHF: I designed a logo for my father's company at the first semester of university. FS: What is your favorite material / platform / technology? BHF: It really depends on he design. But I personally find 3d printing technology very attractive. FS: When do you feel the most creative? BHF: I can't recall a specific time but when a notion turns into a concept creativity can be born. FS: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing? BHF: Conceptual chalenges FS: What makes a design successful? BHF: When aesthetics, function, concept and marketing work all together. FS: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first? BHF: The specification of the design which is reflecting the designer's mind. FS: How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design? BHF: It's becoming very much closer to art specially fine art. And conveying notions and concepts matter more, and also the forms will evolve because of the development of technology. FS: When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition? BHF: My last private show made place last year which I exhibited a series of jewelry and sculptures of mine. FS: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations? BHF: Current year. I mostly get inspired by everything, mostly philosophical and personal notions. FS: Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country? BHF: Iran, Yes I have a series of jewelries inspired by the architecture of different cities of Iran, names Distance. FS: How do you work with companies? BHF: I don't work for other companies. I am self employed. FS: Can you talk a little about your design process? BHF: My design process starts with an idea related to my thinking then I research about it passionately which ultimately become the final product. FS: What are 5 of your favorite design items at home? BHF: I designed the furniture of my own house and I love them very much. I used traditional elements when designing them which I gathered for many years. FS: Can you describe a day in your life? BHF: It's very different and that's what makes them amazing. I hate to be involved in the same day routine. I spend my most days working on my works and studying at the university. FS: From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer? BHF: I think the positive ones are more, because you are always challenging and you need to create new things constantly. FS: What skills are most important for a designer? BHF: I think the most important thing of being a designer is to be open minded. FS: Which tools do you use during design? What is inside your toolbox? Such as software, application, hardware, books, sources of inspiration etc.? BHF: My first tool is pencil and writing down ideas. FS: Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time? BHF: It's very hard and I can't manage it sometimes but when I am time limited it will make me manage time automatically. FS: How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end? BHF: It depends on the projects. For instance I have series called Always which took me a year to get it comlpeted and another interior project took 2 weeks to complete due to time limitation. FS: What is the most frequently asked question to you, as a designer? BHF: Where do you get your ideas? FS: What was your most important job experience? BHF: Presenting the designed product to the customer. FS: What are your future plans? What is next for you? BHF: I'm studying art philosophy so I'm planning to work on the importance of applied art and it'd relationship with fine art and the effect of them on everyday life.
