Interview with Li Kai Chun at Monday 29th of April 2019 FS: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer? LKC: Eric Li was born in Hong Kong. Spent 12 years in the interior design industry. And work to Joseph Sy & Associates . A Hong Kong based interior design firm dedicated to Multifunction spaces and Lighting that blend Urban Modern, chic and Warmth. Yes. In my 10 years old has hoped to be a weird designer. FS: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio? LKC: Joseph had established his own Architectural and Interior Design office in Hong Kong since 1988. He graduated with a Degree of Bachelor of Science in Architecture in 1973 at the University of Santo T'omas, Manila, Philippines. During his scholastic years of 1972 and 1973, he won two Architectural Design Competitions and was a recipient of two consecutive scholarship grants. Joseph was recognized as one of the Ten Most Outstanding Students in the College of Architecture. During his final year of study, he represented his school for the International Design Competition - “William Van Allen Architect Memorial Award, USA” with a project entitled World Ecological Center. Apart from his pursuant in studies, Joseph has a strong passion in watercolor painting and photography, he was honoured with an award in a watercolor painting contest sponsored by Shell Petrochemical, USA in 1972. Joseph’s work has gained international recognition from various Interior Design bodies - “Andrew Martin International Interior Designer Awards, UK”, “Asia Pacific Interior Design Awards”, “Chartered Society Of Designers Awards”, “CIHAF Best 10 Residential Designers, China”, “Electrolux - China Top 10 Sample House/Room Designers Awards, China”, “Hong Kong Art & Design Festival’s Ten Outstanding Designers Awards”, “Hong Kong Design Centre, Design for Asia Award/Distinguished Design, China”, “Hong Kong Designer Awards - Biennial”, “Matsushita Electric Ltd - Nashop Lighting Award, Japan”, “Modern Decoration International Annual Media Prize - Annual Excellent Designers Honorable Prize, China”, “Outstanding Innovative Entrepreneurs, China”, “Perspective Design Recognition Awards”, “Roca - Inspiration and Design Award, China”. FS: What is "design" for you? LKC: I think the design is colour, shape, pattern and lighting. He want to combine multifunction space and lighting. FS: What kinds of works do you like designing most? LKC: I like design combine Lighting and space interior design. FS: What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it? LKC: I like more Architecturally strong design and many Natural lighting design. E.g. Tadao Ando FS: What was the first thing you designed for a company? LKC: Understand the needs of clients and the features of the floor plan. FS: What is your favorite material / platform / technology? LKC: I favorite material is Wood finish FS: When do you feel the most creative? LKC: I often have a lot of new design inspiration when I sleep. FS: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing? LKC: I will focus more during designing the lighting feeling in the space. FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when you design? LKC: I will feel very excited. FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized? LKC: Sometimes I feel uncomfortable. Because there are many on-site restrictions. ` FS: What makes a design successful? LKC: Give yourself more confidence FS: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first? LKC: I consider first is how to combine prefer Lighting and design. FS: From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment? LKC: Designed for maximum effectiveness in a safe situation. FS: How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design? LKC: Improve the feeling of light FS: When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition? LKC: Nothing FS: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations? LKC: My design inspiration come from Light of feeling. FS: How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design? LKC: I think the design is colour, shape, pattern and lighting. He want to combine multifunction space and lighting. FS: Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country? LKC: I live Hong Kong. Hong Kong is a fun city.
