Interview with Arnošt Vespalec at Thursday 27th of April 2017 FS: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer? AV: I've always been thinking and dreaming about many various things. And my grandma Ludmila called me the "Why-boy" because nobody could see me, but I was heared. She was very good painter and gifted person. This is main reason why i chose to become a designer, but there was many and many other aspects, that helped me to follow this path of life. FS: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio? AV: I'd like to, but I don't have any company or a design studio. I am on my own. FS: What is "design" for you? AV: What is design for me? I'ts hard question and I try to answer it simple. Design is complex state of mind for me. I'm not able to design something without open and closed mind. FS: What kinds of works do you like designing most? AV: I was born to enjoy life. It means, that i have to bring happiness to other people's lives. So I like to design every kind of things, that help people the most. FS: What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it? AV: Tree designed by nature. But something designed by human, well it's more invention then a design, but it is ordinary bulb invented by Nikola Tesla. FS: What was the first thing you designed for a company? AV: It was O'led rounded passive cooler. FS: What is your favorite material / platform / technology? AV: It's aluminium FS: When do you feel the most creative? AV: When the silence is in my mind. This silence is associate to white color. White color has all kinds of colors. FS: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing? AV: I try to concentrate on each step, there is not only one major aspect that is important than others, all of them are on the same level. FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when you design? AV: It's like in the middle of wave field. One second I'm happy and the other I'm sad. FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized? AV: It's ten seconds of pure luck. FS: What makes a design successful? AV: Iteration process. FS: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first? AV: Function. FS: From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment? AV: Definately make design more environmental friendly. Designer have to has knowledge about manufacture processes and society weaknesses to make future better. FS: How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design? AV: I think, that evelving of "design field" is on right way. Yes there are many mistakes and many will come, but I am optimist and future of design is bright in new technologies. FS: When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition? AV: I don't have any exhibiton. This will be first one. FS: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations? AV: From observation of real world in his right view. I really don't know, but music help me very much. Inspiration is everywhere in nature, space, living beings, You just have to look. FS: How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design? AV: I don't know if I am right person to describe my style anyway I will try. My design style is technical as well natural , i use many method and rules such as Fibonacci sequence, Fourier transform etc. The main characteristic of my style is learning. FS: Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country? AV: I live in a village. Undoubtedly the cultural heritage of my country affect my design as well as a person. Cons are that people doesn't know what exactly designer do, and ignorance, but it's thanks that design in Czech republic is relative young. Pros are, that you can enjoy your privacy. FS: How do you work with companies? AV: I try to get to know them and to become friends, I like informal communication because it is the most effective in my opinion. FS: What are your suggestions to companies for working with a designer? How can companies select a good designer? AV: Designer work is based on emotions, and mind. Every small or big company needs a designer because we are living beings. And for our happy life we need beauty things, and this is exactly why designers are on this world. There are not bad designers, one designer is good in something else than the other one. My suggestions for companies? Give designers more chances to show You right path. FS: Can you talk a little about your design process? AV: Yes I can FS: What are 5 of your favorite design items at home? AV: pencil, wooden cabinet, wooden bokken, screw jack from Vaz 2105, model of x-wing FS: Can you describe a day in your life? AV: I am a person like everyone who reads this text. I live in the village, so I have a lot of homework where I can healthy dream about a lot of things. Otherwise, I live in an ordinary life that includes hygiene, eating, resting and working. FS: Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers? AV: Don't give up any kind of Your dream!!! The world need designers more than ever!!! FS: From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer? AV: Negative aspects are that as a designer you meet a lot of people would think, that you are crazy.On the other hand everything is balanced and when people become to understand to You, they become call you a visionary and you can make amazing things, that makes a deep mark in another person. FS: What is your "golden rule" in design? AV: Everything is possible, if there are no rule, create it. This is it! FS: What skills are most important for a designer? AV: Trust, faith and crazy imagination. FS: Which tools do you use during design? What is inside your toolbox? Such as software, application, hardware, books, sources of inspiration etc.? AV: It depends on many things. But most often is it idea followed by dancing creation of pencil with paper. After that I use CAD programs to came the design into virtual reality and then into reality. FS: Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time? AV: Even if I try to manage my time. The plans are every time changing as a designing process still continue by his own path. I manage this by slowly resolving each step step by step. FS: How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end? AV: It depends on many aspects. But it can be time interval between one day to several years. FS: What is the most frequently asked question to you, as a designer? AV: What exactly are you doing? FS: What was your most important job experience? AV: It was in Workswell s.r.o. company definitely . They let me design by my way. FS: Who are some of your clients? AV: School, companies, friends FS: What type of design work do you enjoy the most and why? AV: Creating a prototype, because you can see what you have designed and allow you to perfect it. FS: What are your future plans? What is next for you? AV: I don't know yet, the life is colourful of surpraises. But I have open mind for any kind of plan. FS: Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself? AV: Nothing can be done without team work of first class. First class of teamwork include talking with my family, girlfriend, friends. The Second class of teamwork is, that I cooperate with other people from another disciplines. Even if I develop my design by myself, it's team work too. FS: Do you have any works-in-progress being designed that you would like to talk about? AV: Yes I have, but I can't talk about it right now, I am so sorry for that. FS: How can people contact you? AV: They can any kind of way. But please don't throw the stone into my window
