Interview with Sameh Ibrahim Emam at Sunday 14th of May 2023 FS: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer? SIE: when I was young, I was founded by creating designs for any building I saw on TV...after that, I wanted to make people's life easier. FS: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio? SIE: I work mostly with my university FS: What is "design" for you? SIE: design for me equals simplicity and functionality. good design must be simple enough to be understood. FS: What kinds of works do you like designing most? SIE: Furniture and products FS: What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it? SIE: my next one FS: What was the first thing you designed for a company? SIE: my table Iceberg FS: What is your favorite material / platform / technology? SIE: 3D printing technology, for me, is the gate for the future of design and manufacture FS: When do you feel the most creative? SIE: when I have a strong reason for making a design, like helping people or making their life easier FS: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing? SIE: Concept, then Function FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when you design? SIE: exploring, deep inside I'm a 7-year-old kid who likes to discover and explore FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized? SIE: grateful FS: What makes a design successful? SIE: when it is simple enough to be understood and work and function at the same time FS: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first? SIE: Concept and ideas, anyone can make a functional design, but only a few can make you love the procedure for its idea FS: From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment? SIE: the designer must know the needs of society, he must understand that his designs should work in harmony with nature and the environment. he also has the responsibility to aware others about nature FS: How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design? SIE: Artificial Intelligence, I think it could transform all the design processes and ideas FS: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations? SIE: Nature! It has magical formulas for anything FS: How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design? SIE: simplicity! simple but powerful in the idea and Concept FS: Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country? SIE: In Egypt, Cairo FS: What are your suggestions to companies for working with a designer? How can companies select a good designer? SIE: by his work and awards FS: Can you talk a little about your design process? SIE: My priorities are the Client’s comfort, Natural resources, and Function I began by thinking about the concept for the design as it is the essential process to ensure the product’s elegance, then I started to sketch it and the modeling and rendering. FS: What are 5 of your favorite design items at home? SIE: table, chair, desk, sofa, and bed FS: Can you describe a day in your life? SIE: It’s like a journey in which I learn something new every day, I began my day with a quick look at the latest architectural works and forms, then I go to my university to teach my students what I’ve learned and that’s where all the excitement is. That look inside their eyes. FS: Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers? SIE: don't ever let your dream FS: From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer? SIE: Positive: having the chance to create good designs and help people negative : too much wasted time and not finding time for family and friends FS: What is your "golden rule" in design? SIE: putting the user's point of view into everything FS: What skills are most important for a designer? SIE: Imagination FS: Which tools do you use during design? What is inside your toolbox? Such as software, application, hardware, books, sources of inspiration etc.? SIE: my sketchbook FS: Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time? SIE: making (do) list can be a very effective tool for me FS: How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end? SIE: it could take from 2 days to 1 month FS: What is the most frequently asked question to you, as a designer? SIE: how do you get these crazy ideas :D FS: What was your most important job experience? SIE: Patience. FS: Who are some of your clients? SIE: my own university FS: What type of design work do you enjoy the most and why? SIE: furniture, because it is simple, small yet very enjoyably FS: What are your future plans? What is next for you? SIE: to make my own design studio FS: Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself?
