Interview with TimeTec Computing Sdn Bhd at Wednesday 26th of April 2017

FS: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
TCSB: I love art since I was young. I’ve always been intrigued by art and it translates in the love of my job. Design and art are inseparable and to me, learning process has never stopped even long after I left my college. I earned my Diploma in Graphic and Computing from Center Academy of Art (CAA), Kuala Lumpur Malaysia, and I’ve always knew that design is my destiny.

FS: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
TCSB: My company manufactures and sells biometrics products for the global market since 2000 and recently we ventured into cloud computing solutions. The unique thing about my company is, we use a lot of design to conduct our business. We provide various websites (and I meant VARIOUS) for our clients and resellers to access to and gather information without them having to meet us to conduct business. Our design studio is all the time busy and running because the need to upkeep the information in our internet ecosystem is tremendous, but we love it.

FS: What is "design" for you?
TCSB: Apart from providing audience with information, design evokes emotional response, giving you an idea and attachment about a product/service even before you even see/experience the product/service. That’s how Apple and Samsung create an uproar whenever a new iPhone is about to be introduced to the market. And that’s why a woman drooling over a Louis Vuitton handbag.

FS: What kinds of works do you like designing most?
TCSB: Website design, I enjoy experimenting on how a particular effect can be applied to the page to make it look more lively.

FS: What was the first thing you designed for a company?
TCSB: Revamp the official website of the company, a major task for me.

FS: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?
TCSB: The message that the design carries.

FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?
TCSB: Motivation.

FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized?
TCSB: Excitement and happiness.

FS: What makes a design successful?
TCSB: To be able to carry the meaning without having any text explaining it.

FS: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?
TCSB: Whether I’m able to understand what the design is trying to tell.

FS: From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?
TCSB: Design provides artistry and aesthetic values to the world. A great design concerns about all aspects of society and incorporate that to improve the quality of life. I give an example, a great architect must think about the convenience of all users of a building including the less able and the handicapped, they have to use sustainable building materials and provide great design to beautify a city. A clever design makes people stop, think and give back to the society.

FS: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?
TCSB: I like to do research on the net, books, magazines or anything that can give me idea.

FS: How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?
TCSB: Simplicity and informative, I like to create something that looks clean.

FS: Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?
TCSB: I live in Malaysia and im proud of it because it is a multi-racial country, and it is rich in culture, rich in heritage and rich in its artistic values.

FS: Can you talk a little about your design process?
TCSB: Content or relevant information will be provided to me and sometime discussion is needed to further understand a project. I will then conduct my research to deliver the best that I could provide and finally I will come out with a prototype to be approved before everything go live.

FS: Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers?
TCSB: To have the passion in your work, this is the only way to get motivated at all times

FS: What skills are most important for a designer?
TCSB: Constant self-learning, something that you wont learn from any academy.

FS: Which tools do you use during design? What is inside your toolbox? Such as software, application, hardware, books, sources of inspiration etc.?
TCSB: Adobe Design

FS: Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time?
TCSB: Do the research, prepare everything and understand the requirements before you start, this can reduce a lot of disappointments.

FS: How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end?
TCSB: Around a month for a 5-10 pages site.

FS: What is the most frequently asked question to you, as a designer?
TCSB: The focus point of a product

FS: Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself?
TCSB: I work as a team with our developers and analysts.
