Interview with Shu-Ching Tan at Tuesday 17th of May 2016 FS: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer? ST: I was majored in interior design, and finished my degree in Taiwan. After a few years of working experiences in interior design field, I decided to create my own studio. Herzu International Design established in 2005. And I have achieved many domestic and International Award started from 2011~2016. My father was a construction engineer. When I was a kid, he brought me to the construction site to supervise the progress of project. Therefore, the scenes of drilling, pile driving, steel structure, and how a piece of empty land became a land full of housing seems familiar in my memory. Moreover, I started to read magazines and books related to interior design. I thought my sense of design triggered from here. FS: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio? ST: Herzu Design established since 2005. Spatial Therapist Expert in transforming original conditionally restricted structure, HerZu Interior Design creates a fluidity of the spatial sense and the flow that depending more upon the owner’s requirements. HerZu makes individuality and functional requirements by this means infuse the entire plan with creativity. All the design houses possess an ample storage, while retaining a perfect scale of space, which added to that flexible and unique design aesthetics along with exquisitely meticulous construction. It turns a normal house into a kind dream home; HerZu flows through with a living aesthetic the process of structural. ST: Design is naturally derived from the existing elements with poetic and timeless touch. FS: What kinds of works do you like designing most? ST: No limitation. We will and we have the experiences in designing items such as furniture, light source etc during our space design to our client FS: What was the first thing you designed for a company? ST: Residential House FS: What makes a design successful? ST: A good client, a strong and understanding designer team, and good construction team. FS: From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment? ST: To concern and create an environmental friendly space and energy saving concept into design. This is the issue we should concern immediately and in the future. FS: How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design? ST: Design will evolve with the changing of environmental and generation. In today’s society, the topics we should focus on are global warming, shortage of resources and uneven distribution of resources in the world. As a designer, we should take action start from our design. Therefore, this will trigger my inspiration on how to design a house and space that is energy recovery, recycle and saving. In addition, we could utilize the nature conditions of the environment to reduce the use of air-conditioner. Moreover, we should avoid using toxic materials in our design. Future of design should be focused on concerning the living of human being as all of us are the precious gift from heavenly father. FS: When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition? ST: Yes, our last exhibition wasTID Award exhibition 2015 in Taipei, Taiwan. FS: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations? ST: My Inspiration can come from everywhere. Such as life, everything I met, touch, smell. No limitation! FS: How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design? ST: 1. Contemporary style. 2. Transforming original conditionally restricted structure. 3. To create tranquilization and healing space FS: Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country? ST: I live in Taiwan. Taipei is located in the north of Taiwan, which encountered problems of space limitation. Therefore, as a designer, we should always consider how a space is able to integrate with functional design and combine with aesthetic. Another important issue is to create a good flow under the condition of limitation of space. FS: How do you work with companies? ST: Coworking . As an Art director in Herzu Design, I have to first create the creativity concept of design, the concept of design will then pass to my design team to figure out the detail part. After the creation of the detail part, we will have an internal meeting to discuss more deeply about the design and optimized again and again until we satisfied. FS: What are 5 of your favorite design items at home? ST: Theme concept of a project, restroom, open kitchen, lamp & lighting, texture and color FS: Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers? ST: I enjoy being a Designer, this is a good job. You can learn from your client while you’re discussing the project with them, and you can also learn from the products, while you want to select the best items that fit their needs and requirement. You can explore more and realize difference aspect from the people and thing you connected with. However, the negatives are when you’re too concentrating on your job, you will neglect your health, and family. FS: How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end? ST: How do you develop a theme or idea of a design? FS: Do you have any works-in-progress being designed that you would like to talk about?
