Integrating a design perspective into Asian culture, the studio establishes the mixed esthetics in Asia. They are members of IAD (International Association of Designers). it had over 400,000 views as of February 2017 on the homepage of BEHANCE, the world largest art display platform. Its excellent works have been recommended for 12 times and used as the cover of the magazine CUTOUT for Red Dot Design Award and the cover of 「Chinese Design」. As two of the 100 top-most Chinese designers in the world, they are also active participators in International cultural and design exchanges. FS: What is "design" for you? : Design is bundled with commercial society, also closely related to art. Designers should be able to possessboth the features and work between sense and sensibility. FS: What kinds of works do you like designing most? : We like trying and challenging different designs. We always prefer the next work. FS: What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it? : Something that can arouse people’s sympathy. FS: What was the first thing you designed for a company? : An album of crystal. FS: What is your favorite material / platform / technology? : Welike trying different materials and techniques. For this, we often do research inourcooperative factories. FS: When do you feel the most creative? : The process of research is the most enjoyable. We satisfy our curiosity, enrich our knowledge, enlarge our views, and explore the creative universe at the same time. FS: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing? : All. Nothing is trivial when it comes to designing. FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when you design? : I feel a lot. FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized? : Verymoved, just as I see a new-born baby. FS: What makes a design successful? : Sincerity. FS: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first? : Whether your judgment is correct. FS: From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment? : Generally, it’s very commonfor designers to be labeled as “commercial” or “artistic”. They’re inclined to transfer their disappointment in commercial design into theirpersonal artistic design. So, some see the commercial design as a means of making a living, remaining passionlessor even gloomy. But design is born for commerce. A good design shouldboth satisfy the commercial function and contain cultural genes, combining innovation to design quality, so as to impresspeople. As a result, there is no clear-cut among commerce, design and arts, needless to say a hierarchy. The only standard to measure the works is how sincere you are. FS: When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition? : We held our individual tour exhibition “AMAZING 1983ASIA” in 2016 in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, and participated in the visual exchange exhibition “Lost Culture” in Moscow, Berlin, St. Petersburg, Tokyo, Seoul and Taiwan. FS: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations? : The curiosity from design!Staying curious makes us feel fresh and fulfilledevery day. FS: How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design? : The shared love for “Asian culture”encouragesus to keep on. FS: Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country? : One of us is from Tianjin, China, the other from Malaysia. Such a great spanning is a source ofour stronginterest in Asia where we live, and prompts us to doubt and rethink aboutthe West-originated notion of “design”. Now the Indian myth is whatobsessesus . During the research, we’ve found some interesting potential links among Asians. All these experiences are inspiring us. FS: How do you work with companies? : We’re starting a business. 1983ASIA is set up as a design company.
